Pilot Bearing Question

Hey guys,

I'm replacing the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft. I used the bread technique, which worked surprisingly well!

 

The diagram in Haynes is showing a cover plate, felt ring and retainer that get installed along with the pilot bearing.

Can somebody please confirm that those parts are only needed for the exposed ball style bearings and not needed for what I'm installing?

Old bearing on the left (so I don't even have those parts now), new bearing on the right.

You maybe replacing apple with orange.  Internal clearance designation (C1, C2, C3), means that the bearing has room for expansion if needed between the races of the bearing due to heat and is it very important for this application. OEM part is best route to go on this one IMO.

What was originally in there was an open bearing.

 

What you took out was a shielded bearing.

 

What you're putting in is a sealed bearing.

 

You're good- no felt nor metal guard needed.
