Evapo-Rust is AWESOME!!!

Recommended Posts

I decided to try this “evapo rust” product to see if I could get this weird flywheel cleaned up. Trying to determine if I can make it work or if it’s too much work…

Anyway, I’ve had this big chunk of metal soaking for 19 hours and this is what it looks like. Gonna let it soak some more but needless to say, I’m very impressed and highly recommend giving it a try!!!

I'm a big fan of Evapo-rust but usually for small bits only.  It's a bit expensive for a jug.  I'd like to know the ingredients to make my own.

It's reusable.  I have a clear peanut butter container full of it that lives on the corner of my workbench, for use on various nuts and bolts and small parts.  The container and Evaporust are about 2 years old and still going strong.

Really?  I do use it more than once but I had come to the conclusion that once it was black in color that the effectiveness was nil.  I think it even says that on the label.  I'll have to give it some more time before I discard it.

I must admit that I am interested in trying citric acid to see if it is the key ingredient.

These old chisels were coated with thick rust, well, like the flywheel above. I don't know if it was smart to clean them so well but I used them as test item for the citric acid when I read about it. They are just oiled after that. I bet you can find the recipe online. It can also be used many times.

Yeah, it does wear out (agree re black=spent).  Perhaps you're reviving rustier bits than I.  I'm not trying to revive super rusty nuts/bolts/small bits.  With nuts and bolts, if the revival is more than aesthetic, I replace it, and mission critical nuts and bolts get replaced regardless.
