Thank you. I definitely cut out the section of the resistor wire. So it is no longer there. But I do think it may be good to just run a new green wire to the fuse box. Also in the diagram above that John posted I do not have a red black wire from my starter to the coil.

The red/black from the starter is 12v current to the coil when starting bypassing the resistor wire and imo even with the resistor removed you should have that wire. I'm haven't traced the circuit to see if the resistor power line is cut or they just rely on the higher voltage from the starter maybe John 76 will chime in as he's the circuit master.

Yes, the green wire with the resistor section is energized at all times when the ignition is ON. This circuit also powers the electric choke and the idle cut-off solenoid (if equipped). Once the engine starts, the Red/black wire is de-energized and the coil receives power through the resistor which is much less than the 14 volts the alternator provides.  Gives the coil a very long life....I'm still running the original coil at 145k miles!

The Red/black wire from the starter provides a non-resistor source of current to the coil. This acts like a AED (defibrillator) to give an extra boost to the coil (and spark) when the engine is cranking and trying to start a cold and rich mixture (choke ON).

Just like us older guys...cold, rich and cranky. Requiring paddles and a good jolt to get out of bed in the morning. ?

Did a lot today.  I’d like to make one change at a time but I don’t have the luxury of time.  Have to stop this from happening as the car is a daily driver. I have not driven the car since the work done below. 
-Partial disassemble and cleaning of carb

-New fuel filter

-Cleaned KN air filter 

-I did run a new wire from the coil to the ignition fuse

-Torqued bolts for engine ground strap 

-Torqued nuts on starter post. 

-Talked to 123 USA about the problem, but no definitive answers. 
-Ordered new spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor, and will order plug wires soon.

-Seafoam in the gas tank.

 

From the above it sounds like I need to run the red/black wire from the starter solenoid to the coil.

Easy/quick check here:  set up your voltmeter to the + terminal on the coil (and a ground, of course).  Turn the ignition on; you should have 12 volts at the coil.  Then have a friend engage the starter; you should also have 12 volts.  If you do in both instances, the feed to the coil is good.  

 

If you still had a points/condenser distributor, I could tell you how to proceed from there.  But with a 123, I'm totally clueless.

Happy to report a successful day on the road!

I still have the ignition switch on my suspect list if we see it again.

Thanks to all for the support here.  Based on history you mights see me back here asking for help on this issue, but it would be wonderful if not.
