New member intro

I didn't see a new member forum, so I thought I would put this here. I'm getting ready to do some work on my Dad's '76. The car is in excellent shape. Original paint and interior. My Dad is the original owner. I actually remember driving off the showroom floor in San Jose. I couldn't figure out how a car was going to fit through the door. I was only 4.

He and I put in a Metric Mechanics 2.2L Sport engine with a Weber, stainless header and some muffler which I can't remember, back in around 1990. The car has also had a full Quickor suspension (with rear diff relocation) which lowered the car a couple of inches.

We are going to be replacing the rubber brake lines at all 4 corners and possibly installing the Getrag 5 speed that has been in a crate for the past 30 years. The car was a daily driver for our family until the mid-90s. More than anything I wanted to share this car with this amazing community. I'm sure we will need the forum's opinions and guidance on the 5 speed install when we get to that point.

Very sweet car, cool that it's a one family owned car. I know the numbers matching/date code crowd will be concerned with the engine swap. I've got a 1972 that I bought (1974) from the serviceman that purchased it in Germany through the Canadian PX. I've installed a 1974 tii engine and all the suspensor bits. Lots of tranny trade out bits that BluntTech has for the tranny. I installed a 5 speed just after I took mine out of a 20 year sleep, I do wonder why I did that. If I'm gonna spend time on the freeway, there are much better BMW's to be piloting. On the back roads not much 5 speed need. I have friends with Alfa's so yeah, 5 speed and disc brakes.

I like the cars stance a lot, perfect with the 14 in wheels?

These days that crate is more like a chest, a treasure chest.

Very cool story--glad to see you're keeping it in the family--and that you appreciate it as much as your dad.   More than a few second generation family owners on the FAQ.  And welcome to the '02 fraternity/sorority...lotsa good information and friendly folks here.

WRT those flexible brake hoses:  suggest replacing 'em with the stainless steel-clad flex hoses rather than the original rubber ones.   I noticed the rubber hoses on my car--about 15 or so years old--all have the outer rubber covering deteriorating.  The hoses themselves aren't compromised, but they're gonna get replaced before they are--by stainless steel ones.  Blunttech has 'em, as does Max and (I think) Pelican parts.

If you take any long trips, you're gonna love that 5 speed.  It lowers rpms about 800 at the same speed when in 4th...much more relaxed cruising.

cheers, and again, welcome

Thanks everyone. Just to clear up, the car still belongs to my Dad. I'm just giving him a nudge to get it back in use. The brakes are all that needs attention. It hasn't been driven in 15 years or so. We did get it fired up last weekend without issue. Will change all fluids etc when we do the brakes hose replacement. I did order stainless replacements from 2002ad.

I am in the Portland area. The car is about an hour south at my folks place. I will bring it to my place when the brakes are done. I want to take it to the Portland Cars/Coffee and possibly the BMWCCA Oregon meet in August. We'll see.

Hope to see you at the Cars/Coffee. I will be the one without a car. (Currently in pieces)

I am hoping to go this Saturday, but will be riding my black K1600B. The 2002 won't be ready quite yet. Still waiting on the brake hoses.

Say hello if you see me.

Hey Zach - what CnC are you talking about for this Saturday?  I don't see anything on any calendar.  I'm in Salem and might be able to scare up a couple of 02 guys.
