How Does a Carburetor Work?

Recommended Posts

My kids do not watch much, but one of the things we like to watch together is a youtube channel called "SmarterEveryDay".  He just posted a very cool video on how a carb works, complete with a high speed camera and a clear carburetor.  The kids and I were spell bound!

Sure, it may be old-hat for lots of us on here, but the slo-mo visuals are really really cool.

well, obviously, it works by depression.

Which explains why cars use EFI now- all that Prozac flying around makes them... not depressed?

Neat link- thanks!

The short answer:  carburetors suck--air and fuel, that is.  Although EFI aficionados might say they suck in other ways...

Thanks Andrew, I finally got around to watching this.

Go to about 12:35 and watch the "reversion" as some air/fuel is pulsed backwards when the intake valve slams shut. Sidedraft and ITB guys should recognize this as part of the wonderful noise we get from our carbs.
