Selling dilemma

Recommended Posts

I think it may be time to sell good old Fred. Covid has made us reevaluate our possessions and our accumulation of stuff, and having 4 cars that I barely drive doesn't make a lot of sense. This board and its people have given me so much free help and guidance that I feel like I should probably give somebody here first shot at it. I'm not looking to maximize dollars, but I'm not giving him away either. He has had a tremendous amount of work done and drives like a dream, handles like a dream and looks good too. You can se the whole project on my Blog I've attached to the bottom of the thread.

I won't be posting a price, in case I need to resort to BaT down the road. If you're seriously interested, send me a PM and I'll let you know. FYI it won't be cheap, but it won't be BaT sh*t crazy either. I'm just looking to get hime to a good home and not lose my shirt. Read the blog to see what's been done. Every wear part has been replaced. Every, single one.

You should know all the original parts I removed from the car will be included. Front and rear seats, bumpers, console, A/C, sway bars, springs, two sets of wheels (one proper date coded)...everything. This stuff alone is worth a lot of dough, but can also be used to revert the car back to pure OEM stock.

Sad, but it's time.

Thanks guys.

Nick

I recall the car as you purchased it, Nick. Out of… the Bronx?

Anyway, with its bad black paint — not “bad” in the good or cool sense — and other issues, I suspect that few other buyers could or would have saved this car — now in gorgeous condition.

Certain liberties the “current owner” has taken with the car would not be rated 100 on conserv’s originality scale! ??

Nonetheless, it looks absolutely great and now it’s BAD in the good sense of that word. Thanks for saving this car and being a great ‘02 colleague!

GLWS

Best regards,

Steve

The perfect turnkey car for someone who wants an '02, is not caught up on originality and has neither the time, inclination or skills to rehab one...

One thing to consider, Nick...I suspect you'll join the legions of "I shoulda never sold my 2002" about ten minutes after it leaves your driveway for the last time.  Despite all the grief I've had with Ludwig over the past month or so, I'm no closer to selling him than I was in 1978 when I made the purchase.

Beware of "Seller's Remorse."

If I could only have one 'old' BMW it would be a an '02.

Funny, I am debating to sell my newer cars and only keep my '67 1800, and my 66 International Harvester Travelette (work horse)

Your car looks like a perfect running and fun driving 2002.  I know you will sell it to the right person.

Cheers,

Matt

Say it ain’t so, Nick!

You’ve done such a nice job on the car and have been a great resource for our community. if it’s time, it’s time, but I’ll be sad to see Fred go.

Someone will get a nicely-sorted car.

Not to change the course of this thread, but how rare is a squaretail Tii in Polaris?  Would be interested for selfish reasons because I own one, but perhaps it would be useful to Nick to ascertain rarity and value, with the hopes to convince him to keep Fred! (or sell immediately)

The "Guide" says Polaris is a common U.S. color "except for Tii's", and only one model year vs. roundies.  I'd try the registry but not quite user friendly for data sorting.

Steve,

I’ve found that “Guide”, where it portends to summarize the popularity and rarity of colors — without any support by actual data — to be highly suspect, and contrary to my personal experience with many colors. Just saying…

Just read your blog, and I'm thinking maybe you should sell one of the other 3 cars instead.  You put a lot of time and effort into saving this car- just the pride of your workmanship is enough to keep it!   I haven't yet spoken with a former 2002 owner who didn't lament selling their car.   If you sell it, get first right of refusal to buy it back!

Not sure about the rarity of Polaris in a squaretail, but I can tell you having one with a Natural/Beige interior instead of Blue is a downright unicorn. Conerv/Steve and I have been down this road before on this, and he even had me try to prove it was a factory install by trying to find the date code on the OEM seats. Sure enough, they're  dated a month or so prior to Fred's build date.

Having disassembled the interior, I can tell you it sure FELT like it was installed by the factory. A and B pillars, parcel shelf, carpeting...all seemed factory installed.

Now, certainly the dealer could've switched the interior out at the buyer's request, and there's an expert who contends that it absolutely cannot/would not have been done at the factory, but based on my experience and what I've seen, I think it was originally Natural/Beige.
