The external sheet metal of the hoods are identical, but BMW started pre-drilling the support structure so that the collapse of the hood in the event of a serious crash was more predictable and controlled.


The “controlled crash” modifications on my ‘76 are circled in red below.


Not that you’re likely to come across one, 1966 1600-2 hoods don’t have the central latch circled in yellow on the attached photo.
