'75 02-- need aftermarket seat base ideas

PXL_20210510_174451437.jpgPrevious owner removed OEM rails that were part of the floor pan, welding a hodge-poge of scrap steel. I held Mazda Miata seats. I have newly recovered Recaro model 86 seats that I want to install,,,and of course re-do the pan, carpets, etc.

Anyone know of an aftermarket seat base that I can bolt on the floor pan and adapt sliders and the recaros to. Nothing on-line at IE, Bluntech, 2002AD, etc. EBay has seat bases for newer BMW, but Im not sure of compatibility.

any help is appreciated!

I'll bet there some folks on the FAQ with parts cars that can supply the original welded-in rails for you to reinstall on your car.

Failing that, take measurement from another car with its original rails in place, and make your own from square tubing or angle brackets.

Although it seems a shame to undo the work of what is obviously a master fabricator ? do put a add in the parts wanted for stock seat rails and look up the thread on fitting e30 and later seats to the 02 you'll get a good idea of the ways later seats have been added.

I was wondering if it would be easier to get a universal base like this:Passenger Seat Bracket for MOMO / NRG / Sparco / Recaro / Bride / OMP - BMW E36 Coupe (1992-1999) - Part # SB006PA"Invictus universal seat base" for BMW E36, fits Recaros. (Amazon)

(the attached pic got flattened out, doesnt actually look that flat) 19"x14" x1.6"H

The problem is the huge hump in the floor, I don't know of any base that will accommodate it with out some fabrication.

You might try the e21 320i seat sliders, they will bolt on to the Recaro's and could probably be bolted to the floor or the current steel square tubing if its welded in properly.

Or aftermarket universal sliders and some custom brackets made of steel square tubing or bar stock.

I may try the universal base, 320i slider approach on the passenger side first.

I appreciate these comments very much...i've also been thinking about going to a auto fabricator shop, since the seats are so important to do right.

Yeah seats are part of the safety system in cars. If your seat moves during an accident all bets are off. It's like having great brakes but crap tires, without one the other is useless.

Anywhere you bolt into the sheetmetal for seats or seatbelts should be reinforced.

Measure carefully to make sure the universal seat base will fit before you buy it. I would start with the 320i sliders, they have mounting tabs that you might be able to bolt to the floor with reinforcing plates.

Bolt the sliders to what's there and call it good?  I'd love to be that low in the car...  I might put some big nutserts / threaded inserts in the holes to make my life easy, if it's solid I might try it before I cut it out and started over...

My rant-  the original seat mounts are crap at best.

In your case, I'd weld 2 square tubes between the sill and the tunnel,

and then mount a seat on that.

Seats don't take much loading in most quality wrecks, but the stock

mounts pull out before you even get to the 'tumble and roll down the hill'

phase, and that's not good.

some things can be improved.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
