Transmission Bench Test Device

Recommended Posts

I've done it with a drill, which i think is better than this IC engine, because you can hear the transmission better.  Super easy, but really doesn't tell you much you can't tell by turning and feeling things by hand.

To check synchros don't you need something like a flywheel on the output to cause the two halves of the gear train to operate at different speeds?  A clutch master/slave doesn't get you what you need.

Turning by hand will usually give you an idea if it just needs bearings or if the gears are trashed. I can tell you from buying and selling multiple used transmissions that its pretty easy to tell if they are good or bad by looking at the gears through the fill and drain plugs and assessing the magnet on the drain plug and old fluid. As long as it spins by hand without too much play and noise, the magnet doesn't have any big chunks and the fluid doesn't smell burnt you're probably ok.

By the time you go through all the trouble of making all the stuff necessary for this test stand you might as well just hook it all up to an m10 engine on a test stand with a  flywheel, clutch system and pedal.

That thing is dumb, you lose all ability to "feel" any roughness or binding and the go cart motor destroys any hope of hearing anything. I for one would rather not have exhaust gas spewing in my face.

How pointless😉

Uhh, I'm the one who made up the "transmission bench test device" meme as a joke.

Oh, duh.

Engineers brains dont work that way.

Oh.  That would take a lot of extension cords...
