Sleuthing my old ‘72 2002 in Middle TN

Price: $100
Location: Murfreesboro, TN

Description:

Hello there, perhaps you’ve seen my old 02  that I’d like to be reunited with?

She’s a ‘72 2002 that I owned from 2010 till 2015. I moved across country and was unable to bring her with me so I sadly had to sell her - a decision I’ve deeply regretted for quite some time. A gentleman in Lebanon, TN purchased her and held on to the car till 2018 then sold it to an individual residing here in middle TN. Since then she’s pretty much disappeared. I’ve contacted the person who bought her from me but haven’t received a reply. I’ve also checked with my 02 contacts here in TN and they’re scratching their heads on this one - the consensus is they’d probably be aware of her if it is still in the area.

If you have any details, even minor, I’d appreciate you hitting me up. Any little shred of information may help in solving this mystery. Thanks for reading.

Yes you did!  I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed her.  I’ve regretted letting her go for years but I’m earnestly working to return to the stock job I was working toward.  My buyer has contacted me and is looking for their buyer so hopefully that will produce some leads.  It’s good to hear from you!

What is the VIN?

Have you started by searching on the VIN? If you have no hits on Google, in most states, with a VIN, you can find out if a car is registered. Some DMV’s can provide the name and address of the owner if it is registered, or simply in its database. Some cannot, while some cannot provide the name and address through the DMV, but can provide the name and address if a request is filed under the Freedom of Informatiom Act (FOIA).

If the car has left Tennessee, you may be SOL, unless you want to file DMV requests in a number of the most likely new residence states.

The first thing I would do, besides this present thread — which will disappear from regular view in a day or two — is to make a listing in this forum’s Registry (select Browse / Registry / Enter new vehicle). You will need the VIN to list the car. Post photos of the car on the listing and say, in the text, that you are looking for the car. Put your forum username in the listing. It will take all of one minute to do this and will leave a record that is much more visible than a discussion thread.

Good luck,

Steve

Esty - I just PMd Les Cartwright.  We’ll see what he says. Thanks!

Steve - yes sir I’ve searched the VIN in various search engines only to receive lackluster results.  I’ve also posted on CL (no VIN) and my buddy is posting it on the local Old Hickory BMW CCA FB page.

I’ve been told, for a buck, you can go to the county clerks office and they can look up the registration IF it’s in the county.  It may not be, but my buyer said he sold it to someone local so it’s worth investigating.

That all being said I will definitely take your advice and list her in the registry.  A tremendous idea I had no idea about.  Killer suggestion and you have my thanks!!!

Did someone say my name??

I've contacted Dave with what little I know - actually I only know the sale in 2010 when Dave bought the car. No sign of it since.

Having the VIN may help; you never know.

Les

Thanks again Les.  I PMd you the license plate I had that I passed to Joe when I sold it in 15.  Not sure if he used it - I thought it was cool.  And the current owner - who knows? ??‍♂️

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
