Finish on Late Model Black Grilles

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'd like to repaint the grilles on my '74, but I'm not sure if that should be done in flat or gloss black paint. Does anyone know what the finish was from the factory?

Thanks,

Ric

Not glossy! But also not dead flat. Satin would probably get you close. Semi-gloss might overstate the gloss... slightly. It’s simply molded black plastic, and it had some natural sheen to it.

Below, my ‘76 in April 1977.

Regards,

Steve

Squarelight plastic grilles weren't painted from the factory; if thorough cleaning doesn't get 'em nice and back to their original finish, rather than painting, try going over 'em with XXXX (finest) steel wool.  That'll get any encrustations off, and give yo a nice satin finish.

What Mike said-hopefully that’ll do the trick. Finish ‘em off w/some Meguiar’s Ultimate Black Plastic Restorer or an equivalent product.

Steve, these photos are awesome! Great quality for the time as well. Especially cool for me as my 74 is Polaris; it's fun to imagine what it looked like when it just rolled off the line.

Cheers,

I'll try to give them a proper cleaning first.

Ric,

Yes, get them clean first. I use Simple Green, water and a tooth brush.

Then, use a product like Meguiar's Plastic Cleaner #17.

Follow-up with Meguiar's Professional Plastic Polish #10.

I did this just before Super Bowl Sunday......my wife thought I was going to clean the BBQ grill!

Little did she know 😁.
