Wanted! Early Embossed 1600 Nose Trim

BMW1600TR

Recommended Posts

Hello FAQers,

I am actively looking for the early model BMW 1600 embossed hood chrome trim piece for my 1966 BMW 160-2 project. I am aware they are tough to find, and probably harder to ship safely. But I’m serious about finding this piece so I’m prepared for the potential effort and price that may come with the search.

If anyone has a lead on this piece, or a spare in the parts stash, drop me a message please I will consider a slightly damaged piece also. See the photos below for reference.

Thank you kindly

There are currently plans to reproduce both smooth & dimpled styles of embossed nose trim in limited quantities. Will take about 3-4 months to get it right. As of this writing that's July or August 2021.

I recently found some embossed trim for my 68 and it had one of the rectangular hardware bits stuck in it @Slavs. I did notice, however, that the piece in general is slightly skinnier than the curved corner trim, so the union between the two is a little awkward.

And I believe that if you find any of the three styles of early nosepiece trim (i.e., 1966 through early 1968), and place it on a 1966 through 1968 car, you should never mention it again, because only 4 people in the world will know whether it is 100% correct... ?

And 2 of those 4 won’t be quite certain!

Best regards,

Steve

Is there a possibility I could be kept informed about these?

This is good news.
If the part is produced, please inform us here please ?

Yet I once found the elusive dimpled style on a late-69 build junkyard car.  I have to assume this was a retofit early in it's life.  No, you can't have it, the part was in very bad shape and I left it at the junk yard, many years ago, sigh.

My May 1969 2002 came to me with the embossed hood trim piece.

My 11/68 2002, a one owner car, had the smooth trim.  I don’t think it came on 68 or 69 cars.

The exact date is not known. But in the middle of 1968 the smooth one began to be used

If I had to guess based on very little evidence — these front trim pieces have to rank with center grilles as “most likely to be replaced many times” — I’d say the embossed front trim disappeared not long after March 15, 1968.

The earliest 2002’s came with embossed front trim. The first 2002, VIN 1660001, manufactured November 29, 1967, certainly had it (first photo, from Road & Track), and the second U.S. 2002, VIN 1660002, manufactured December 12, 1967, certainly had it (second photo, from Car and Driver).

But it didn’t disappear with the end of the 1967 calendar year. The last car I can find, which appears to have its original front hood trim, is a 1968 2002, VIN 1660482, manufactured March 15, 1968. Yes, it’s a Manila car color-changed to an odd gold/copper color. But one look at the interior, and you’ll recognize that, apart from the paint, this is a highly-original example:

Some time after March 15, 1967, the front trim lost its embossing.

That’s where I’m at. I’m eager to see more examples, proving or disproving my proposed changeover date.

Best regards,

Steve

No argument there Chris.  Hence my inclusion of “came to me with”.    That dented trim piece I removed from my car is now in possession of another early car owner.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
