Inside diameter of front strut tube?

So going on the advice to use 1984 rabbit strut inserts for my 1974 02 with the IE coil over perches etc..... I had to get Sachs inserts as some of the others are not available right now.  They came in today and seem the OD of the insert won’t make it past the taper in the tube....

thoughts or measurements to share so I can return and re-order?

thanks in advance

I'd start by Checking the inside of the tube where the welds are, might need to grind off any roughness. Then I would measure the strut cartridge diameter and compare to original and/or strut tube diameter. It looks like the inside diameter of the strut tube should be about 40mm. It's also a tight fit some people suggest using lubricant to make them slide in easier, might need to remove the parts tag.
