Nicely restored and fairly original '73 tii.  The color and racing stripes may polarize some, but I personally think it's pretty classy looking.   A nice set of tasteful upgrades (Recaros and E24 rear seats, new Euro bumpers, momo wheel, suspension, etc) that appear to have been done with good attention to detail.  Dealer sale.

-I would argue that the biggest thing holding this car back IS the tii mechanical fuel injection.  It is my opinion that plenty of us who would build a car like this would much prefer the carb base (given it's much more friendly to play with).

-I like the running spreadsheet that seems to detail every associated cost with the restoration.  That would actually be nice to upload to the FAQ to use as an example to those wondering about restoration costs.

PROS:  02 hotrods are the best 02's.  That exhaust is really well done.  The blue is nice, and while not an original color, it still suites the 2002 well.  There's still plenty of room to tinker and personalize.

CONS: Some personal aesthetic choices would be done differently (needs trim strip between taillights, needs anodized [not painted] grills, and could use 13" wheels on some pirelli rubber).

I agree with Andrew on the unfortunate customization. I wonder if the downhill 2002 tii script on rear panel was another personal preference. Attention to detail needs to be high in this price range.

Well... since you asked me...

The round taillight tii represents to me — and all car taste is obviously personal — the ultimate Modell 71 ‘02 (‘02’s from April 1971 through July 1973). That means long-tail rear bumpers, bumper rub strips front and rear, knee trim, “later” front bumper overriders — not to mention the blacked-out grilles of all ‘02’s, from ‘68 onward. And these features make a tii easily recognizable as such.

This gentleman’s vision, however, is of a decidedly-retro restomod: not simply pre-Modell 71, but pre-2002: note the 1600-2 silver grilles, small auxiliary lights, early bumpers and overriders, and much older Mobil Pegasus decals. The racing stripe would be perfect on your 1965 Ford GT40. Great! Terrific! Well done! But why consume a round taillight tii in the process? This car is going to sell for a bunch of money. But I don’t believe the 276xxxx VIN or Kugelfischer injection contribute a cent to that value: an originally carbed ‘02 with dual Webers — or even modern fuel injection — would get you to the same dollar amount, and the same performance, at least — because you could also step up the camshaft! And some other enthusiast could then have their factory Colorado tii...

Thanks for asking. I feel better now... ?

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
