Price: $14000
Location: San Diego

Description:

I've owned and enjoyed this 02 for 11 years. Well maintained by La Jolla Independent and International Motorcars. Inka Orange exterior  and brown interior. Retrofitted with 5-Speed Transmission and Weber Carb. Runs well, new Distributor and Fuel Pump installed in August 2020. Paint and interior in fair condition. One inch crack on dash board. Lowered slightly when new springs and shocks were installed. 41,000 shown, but TMU as the odo didn't work when I bought the car. I had the plastic gear replaced and it works now.  Have records from my ownership and some from previous owners.

Brown interior with inka exterior??

It would be very rare, but it is possible!

I was fairly shocked to see a gorgeous Inka 1976 at Vintage a couple of years ago with the Nylon Brown (beige) interior. How do we know that it was original? The original window sticker — showing both exterior and interior colors — was present, photo below. So, yes, 1976 is not 1973. But it happened at the factory, at least once.

Still, I’d inspect the seats for date labels — particularly in the backrests of the front seats — and, if that failed (e.g., seats had been previously gutted, which doesn’t appear to be the case here), I’d look at the other indicia of seat dates: style of perforated vinyl, finish on recliners (chrome versus painted), headrest supports (10mm. vs. 12mm.), and headrest style (photos showed “eared”, not the earlier tubular, headrests). Admittedly, even if the seats’ dates or indicia match perfectly with the car’s manufacturing date, there is also the possibility of a dealer swap, as happened within the non-too-flexible Hoffman ordering system. My sunroof-less Polaris ‘76 has the lowered front seats of a sunroof Chamonix ‘76 that arrived at the dealer on the same truck, and vice versa.

But, yes, I believe brown seats with an Inka exterior are theoretically possible, and perhaps more possible for a European Delivery car.

Best regards,

Steve

I have recorded a few Inka '02s with Brown-Black interior but the carpet on those that seem original is a light tan/beige colour. This one has a salt & pepper carpet so there's a good chance the interior seats, door cards have been changed. JMO.

I have a set of newly upholstered black e21 Recaros and a matching rear done by Dave Vaarco that would look great in this car!  Waiting for the local to test drives to conclude to determine if I have a chance to buy it.  Seems unlikely. That would end the brown versus black debate but open up a future stock versus modified interior discussion!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
