Yeah, the only numbers on the transmissions are casting numbers, and as SoM says, those casting numbers aren't

unique to any particular variant.  So, for example, the same number is on the casting for the 4 speed and the 3- piece OD 5- speed.

Got it.  So maybe I am looking for numbers in the wrong place.  I can't see any other numbers, but my views are limited with it in the car.  I see nothing on the flat spot on the top of the bellhousing where it mates to the block.  Can anyone give me a hint as to where to look?  On the side with the filler plug?  I've been out of the 2002 active loop for a bit, so forgive me obvious questions.

As Toby mentioned, the ONLY numbers on transmissions are casting numbers. There are no numbers to look for to get the answer you want.

Visual identification is your only way forward.

You are starving us for info here, forget about numbers on the trans.

1. what model of car is it in? a 2002 or???

2. Dogleg 5 speed? can you verify the shift pattern?

3. Need a pic of the clutch slave cylinder on the trans and the rear section as well.

Its the only way.

If the slave cylinder is identical to the 4 speed and the shift pattern is a 5 speed dogleg, most likely a 235/5 Getrag as Steve's pictures show.  But if the slave cylinder mounts on the driver's side, the reverse light switch points out the back (as opposed to on top) and the shift pattern is a 5 speed dogleg, most likely a Getrag 245/10 transmission.  Both will have the 5 speed extension, but the 235/5 uses the same slave cylinder as the 4 speed in the same position.

thanks all -- while I try to figure out how to post photos, I can offer the following narrative-

- reverse switch is on DS

- CS is on DS

- CS mounts - with bleeder to the rear

- The pattern is (as far as I know), typical dogleg:  1st is down and to the left, below reverse but offset a bit.  2-5 are H pattern

TIA and all that!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
