VIN 2761526 is a U.S.-spec 1972 model tii manufactured in May 1972. You can still make out “5/72” and most of the VIN digits on the driver’s door VIN sticker. Given that the underside of the car has been over-painted In black, I’d bet a few bidders would feel better about the “factory Verona” claim if they simply saw an email from BMW Group Archives to that effect. Just needs an email with the VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com.

The car does have aluminum intake runners on a car that left the factory with plastic runners — all U.S. tii’s prior to VIN 2761944, and then from VIN 2762015 through 2762372. Although conversions from the problematic plastic runners to aluminum runners were sometimes performed even by dealers, this one has more going on in the engine compartment. The block was cast March 31, 1980 (“31C” within the oval frame and “80” nearby), which might make it simply a replacement block. But the “18” on the engine number boss — original tii’s have “2,0” stamped in that location — might indicate 1.8 liters and this could be a block from a 1980 e21, or it could be a new replacement block for any 1.8-liter e21. The eight-digit number stamped on the engine number boss, without “+” signs, and the “SB” (I believe we’ve seen that before on the forum), are not simply codes for an ‘02 factory exchange engine. Questions need to be asked. But answers to those questions might well be unknown.

Honestly, I don’t know what, if any, effect a 1980 e21 block and aluminum runners might have on the car’s value.

Regards,

Steve

The seller on BAT is a rank and file regular seller. He said he has listed over 200+ cars

He likely known's much more about the car, but then again it's on consignment through his dealership.

I believe it’s a fair price — from seller’s and buyer’s perspective — for a very presentable and driveable round taillight tii with a 1980 1.8-liter block and later-style intake runners. This is a nice daily driver, not a show car.

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
