Old style gas cap

Recommended Posts

I traveled out of state last month and anytime I travel,  I look through the local Craigslist and FB Marketplace at the location where I'm traveling to for parts of interest.  In the OKC Craigslist,  I saw an ad for 2002 parts, and contacted the seller to check out the parts for sale.  I ended getting a VDO washer bottle with pump, good used door brake,  coffee can full of assorted BMW nuts and bolts,  and this old school gas cap with the flap over the key hole.  All for $20, unfortunately the seller couldn't find the key to the gas cap.  Even with no key, it was way to cool to pass up.

Gordon, the locking cap you pictured is the second of three styles BMW sold during the '02 run.  The earliest style is polished stainless steel, with a round, chromed pot metal keyhole cover.  They were generally available during the roundie era.

The one you found is the type most often fitted to squarelights, as it was sold later in the car's production run.

The third style is what you get when you buy a new one from BMW classic--it doesn't have any flap over the keyhole, just a spring-loaded cover similar to those on the door locks.

IIRC that cap and the earlier ones used different key blanks, but I'll bet a good locksmith could make you one from scratch.  That one looks brand new.  Great score!

Nice find, I'd use it with out the key, when the price of gas rises to the point people are siphoning it think of the damage that their pipe wrench is going to cause to your car, let them have the gas IMHO.

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

if you want to make the key for this style of gas cap.

I just had a key cut for the same style gas cap and the key # is ILCO 1125H H5, works great.

Speaking of '02 gas cap keys...

Thanks to Andrew Wilson's suggestions to both (1) have and use a locking '02 gas cap and (2) keep the cap key on the same ring as the ignition key, I no longer leave '02 gas caps at gas pumps.

Yep, been guilty a few times over the last 40+ years of '02 ownership.  I publicly admit it and now feel better.

Thanks, again, Andrew.

That's the same cap I have! Been a good cap. Original owner picked it up new. Very nice piece!

Some tinkerers here have cut a gasket from a margarine or coffee can lid & placed it between the cap & rubber gasket to improve the seal.

Coming back to this, that looks like a 320i fuel cap, not a 2002 cap. Picture might have me goofed up for size, but the 2002 cap is larger from memory.

I have one of that style cap, but it is missing the cap, for the key.

It is missing the key as well.

It measures 3 3/8" in diameter, (or ~ 85 mm).

I made some plastic shims for behind the rubber seal, when we were discussing the topic back in 2013.

Took some photos of the fun.
