Electric Fan Update?

For Healey3000:

When I spoke with Spal, they said that they no longer sell a PWM and don't recommend them for their fans. The Spal tech support person said it would wreck the fan.

I am wondering if you had any problems with you Spal fan and PWM you wrote about in the Technical Articles Electrical and Ignition section?

Also, do you know another PWM manufacturer that would work with a Spal fan?

What I am looking for is a single PWM box that acts as the relay which I can connect to power and directly to the fan, and program.

Hi,

Spal probably told you that PWM will damage the fan because the controllers that one can buy run around 100 Hz for the PWM frequency.  Low frequency like that will damage the fan, not to mention, it will sound like a hammer drill.

With the scheme I have, the fan is driven at 20 kHz, which is fine for the fan motor.  I had had lengthy discussions with Spal about this and got deep into the technical details.  As far as I know, there is no off the shelf high frequency PWM controller available but it may be worth searching as it's been a year or two.

@Healey3000helped me get rid of the growling fan a while back and it has been working fine.  I have to look in the grill to see if it running, the fan runs so quiet. However the fan speed (duty cycle) is controlled by my ECU from a straight line temperature curve of the radiator outlet temperature.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

jimk,

What make and model of fan do you have installed? Also, do you have AC, the engine driven fan still installed and what ECU are you using to run the fan?

I want to vary my fan speed for noise and help reduce electrical load

Fan is a Rapid Cool ThinLine 14inch.  No AC, no engine driven fan.  Ecu is a Haltech Elite.  ECU sends pwm control signal to a Ford Fusion 2013 fan controller for soft start and variable speed.

I have had really good luck with the Mr. Gasket fan. I'm going on 5 or 6 years with it. Dead reliable and fairly quiet.
