Turn Signal / Blinker speed

Hello all,

Super weird request but I was wondering if someone could post a video of the speed of which their blinkers blink at? I feel like mine is a bit wonky and was hoping to see what everyone else's was. Hopefully mine is just fine and I won't have to go down the rabbit hole of 2002's turn signal problems. Car is a 1974 BMW 2002tii

Thanks,
Shark

Can't oblige because I'm fully electronic at this point, but if there is a common reason for blinker speed to be off it's the placement of incorrect wattage of bulbs.  In the early cars the wattage is marked on the reflective surfaces of the tail lights and the front markers (same in early and late models) just use standard 1157 dual filament bulbs.  Can't go wrong.  Hopefully the later cars have the wattage marked as well.  Easy fix.

If the blink rate is super fast, you probably have a bulb out, or one that isn't making good contact and is blinking dimly.  Easy way to check:  wait 'till dark, the turn on your emergency flashers and see if both front and both rear lights are blinking at the same intensity.  Then try the turn signals with the lever, left, then right.  If all four bulbs are the same intensity as turn signals as they are as emergency flashers, then that isn't your problem.  If they're bright as emergency flashers and dimmer as turn signals, it may be either the fuse or the turn signal switch (lever) itself.  Read on...

The other thing to check is to make sure your flasher unit is getting its full ration of volts--check the relevant fuse--clean and reinstall.  See if that helps.  It would be unusual for the voltage at the flasher relay itself to be low for a reason other than the fuse, unless the turn signal lever is dirty.  You might try giving it a squirt of brake cleaner or electronic contact cleaner; they really get dirty inside after 40+ years.

if they work and there's no threat of the car blowing up why does it matter if they blink 20x per sec or 25?

i'm just curious why people are always digging for rabbit holes

the blinker speed may be dependent on the flasher you have in the car too..my blink speed changed when i installed an electronic flasher

another thing i'm curious about is if you don't know what the blinker speed should be why do you think it's wonky

or it could be a poltergeist

sorry, i have a curious mind

Go watch ryandanco’s story on IG. I’d like to think it’s a hilarious coincidence.

I was driving a nice little 67 1600 in Florida Green. It is a completely original survivor, all 6V electronics included.

I chalk the "turn signal dance" as part of the 6 volt experience.

Sorry for not responding for a while, ill start from the beginning. I believe that somethings wonky with some more of my electronics, im just sorting it out slowly. As for why I care, well its such a short blink that I feel like some stupid person on their phone will miss it and the gap between blinks is long enough that a quick glance won't be long enough. No its not life threatening at this point but id rather have peace of mind. Now, all 4 corners are the same hazards or blinkers. None missing. None dim. Thanks for all of the information, I will be trying most of these suggestions in the next few days when I have free time.

This is a great video and one that shows that im correct in my assumption of it being a bit off. Perhaps its just a wonky flasher.
