Frozen smog pump..repair or replace?

bought the car with blown head gasket.. decided to have engine rebuilt... not sure if there was a belt on it but now I see the smog pump (air pump) does not turn. Local auto parts can't get it. Rock Auto looks like I can send it in and they rebuild it. Any ideas? is this something I can do? What's the best option? All the smog stuff is on the car and I am hoping to pass smog. Thanks in advance

First off. In what state are you located? Are you absolutely certain they require emissions testing for your car? For instance, a 1976 model in most parts of California would require biannual emissions testing. But most states do not require emissions testing of 44-year-old cars!

If, indeed, you own a 1976 2002 and have it registered in California, you will have to pass both a visual test — to ensure you’ve got all the right components — and an emissions test. For this, look at the For Sale section of this forum, and/or post a Want-to-Buy ad on this forum: used emissions equipment flows through here all the time, largely for 1976 2002’s registered in California.

Regards,

Steve

or check to see  if  one for a '74 ford Pinto will work. the one way valve on the metal line to around the back of the head is for a pinto and/or generic. You will probably have to replace that too.

Take the pump apart and see if you can free up the vanes and bearings.

Alternatively, you can gut the pump and put a dime(?) at the fitment on the exhaust manifold to pass a visual. Getting it to comply at the tailpipe is another matter.

@MBar is your 2002 a ‘76? If so, are you in a county in California that requires it pass a smog inspection? If not, you know what you can so with it, right?

The air pump used on nearly all ‘75-‘79 BMWs is a metric version of a common A/C Delco unit found on many GM cars of the era and newer. Any auto parts store employee worth their salt should be able to find one. I’d advise bringing your old one to a Federated or Napa franchise or any older, local, auto parts store.

While I couldn’t find it listed under a ‘76 2002, I found the pump on Napa Auto Parts under a ‘78 320i...

Hey MBar,

Not an answer to your question but for $200 cash and the right smog tech you too can magically have a smog on the CA dmv computer. It sometimes takes a lot of effort and $ to get all those old smog bits to work properly and help your engine run poorly.

I live in Santa Monica.

In 1983, when I was taking my ‘76 out of daily driver service and buying spare parts — because many of us believed that manufacturers only needed to provide spare parts for 7 years — BMW could not provide a smog pump and sent me to the local Chevy dealership. I left the Chevy dealer with an exact duplicate of my original air pump, but in an AC Delco box.

Hi

I removed all of the smog gear off my 1969 - 1600 (I live in Canada).   I believe it worked because the car came from California seven years ago.   I have no use for it but would gladly sell it OR trade it for a CV joint rear half-shaft.    Can clean it up and take a pic for you.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
