Had to get my cars and coffee fix this morning at a local event in Camas, WA and found an empty spot next to this beast! My ‘72 on the left seems a bit dated but I’m not complaining. Happy first day of summer!

Pretty cool.

I noticed that both guys in the photo are looking at the 2002....Not the beast. ?

Thanks! Funny, I was waiting for them to get out of the shot but they were just sort of lingering haha

Technically yes, stylistically nope.

Call me crackers, but I’d take your car over the late model any day, that is unless I took the late model, sold it, and bought more 02’s!

Right there with you, mate!

I vote for the 02 too.  On a financial statement, the car on the left would be classified as an asset, and the car on the right as a liability.

Why is the ground all wet?  If it rained that much in LA, we would have cancelled the event.

For those most interested in DIY maintenance, the list for the i8 begins and ends with washing the windshield

They were threatening to cancel but the rain held off for the first 20 minutes before the drizzle began.

ORWAs (Oregonians and Washingtonians) aren't going to let a bit of wetness stop them.

Just ask any one of us parental units that has sat through long and wet soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, football etc. etc. games....

BMW's mission statement is “to become the world's leading provider of premium products and premium services for individual mobility.”

Asset and depreciating asset.

The 2002 is a sport oriented car. (asset)

The i8 is a "premium product and premium service for individual mobility". (depreciating asset)

There's rain in that picture?  That's just a little damp...

it can do that all day.

BMW and I parted ways philosophically a long time ago.

Probably after the E30, E34, and E38.  Everything got droopier,

blobbier, and, critically, heavier.

And crucially, the M badge followed along.  They had the chance to diverge-

make the M a real enthusiast car-

but they chose to provide "premium products" not sports cars.

Well, hell, let's face it, the 2002 and E30 were kind of happy accidents-

the damned things had (and still have, in current generations) MacPherson struts up front, universally regarded as

'far less sporting than  that cool dual offset wishbone thing that Honda did'

t

likes the cars, but they're 'transportation packages' and if you need that, why not a used Tesla?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
