Wiring Marchal Amplilux lights for both bulbs on w high beam

Hi -

I've picked up a set of Marchal Amplilux lights - they have separate bulbs for low and high beams (H1 & H3).  I have a '74, can anyone out there who has these share how they rewired the relays to have both bulbs light on high beam? I don't have the documentation that comes with the lights, does anyone have it and would be willing to scan a copy for me?

Thanks,

Barrett

Hm...

Never heard of twin bulb additional lights before but however: you should integrate at least one optional relay, if not two. The factory wires to the standard lights are not that weak but too weak for light upgrades. Think about an add'l fuse.

I had them that way. Will try to see if I still have a diagram..... After 45 years....

I did use two fused relays with 10ga. wire, and did not hack up the harness, so it was reversable.

With those and 4 Cibie super Oscars it tends to task the alternator if they are all on for a long time.

Barrett,

Here’s the original instructions. Still, a little confusing for me.

Don’t even consider the alternative — only lows, and only highs. I believe the instructions suggest that if you have a low-powered generator (not an alternator), you might have to resort to that terrible alternative. But, the “high beams” were designed to be used simultaneously with the “low beams” to achieve a true “high beam” light.

I ran them on my ‘70, many many years ago. I can’t recall who helped me wire them.

Regards,

Steve

I love those marchal relays they have a built in fuse and can be wired to trigger with positive power or grounding giving you many more wirering options. The problem is they were used on both p cars and ferraris who have driven the price up.

Daniel Stern pointed me to these guys for resilvering and other rework: http://www.reflektorklinik.de/ Fortunately mine are in really good shape, all but the lower left are unused.

I have these "Mixo" period (?) French relays, wish they were fused

(@einspritz, do these count for the extra credit?) - Those Marchal relays look really nice.

Hella made (and may still make) a fused relay--it uses the same ceramic cartridge fuse as our '02 fuse boxes, under a little plastic cover.  I used one when I installed a high beam relay on my '73.  I think those relays are still available...

And those Mixo relays in Barretts photo above are actually for their electric horns--AFAIK Mixo never made lamps, but really loud horns!

The fuse is nice but what really sets the marchals apart is they are all wired externally which gives you many more ways to wire the relay I don't know any other relay that is externally wired but there maybe more.

Hi Mike -

I like the idea of a relay that uses the same fuse as the rest of the car, always nice to be able to steal a fuse from one thing for another is needed. Can you look and see if you can still make out a model number on it? I seem to have pretty good luck scrounging around and finding things.....

Thanks,

Barrett
