Inside Pedal Box Cover

Recommended Posts

I have a new outside pedal box cover that you can see from engine compartment or underneath.  Just wondering whether many of you have the inside cover/sound pad.  I never notice it in anyone's pedal rebuilds or interior re-dos pictures.  And does it just lay there or is it secured somehow?  My car did not have one.

Thanks,

Steve

The inner pad--primarily for sound deadening and to support the carpet--just sat there, held in place by the carpet.  Most original ones have long-since disintegrated, and while they're still available, most folks don't bother to replace it.  The carpet--and noise level--seem to be just fine without it.

I put a new one in when I rebuilt my pedal box, mostly to keep debris out. I doubt it does much for sound deadening and it seemed expensive for what it is. It did fit in place snugly so I didn’t worry about attaching it securely.

I purchased an inside and outside cover.  I installed the inside cover, but it was recommended that I not install the outside one, as it collects moisture and water, which causes the pedal box to rot,

There are tabs on the backside that sits inside pedal box to secure it down as you see in this picture. Remove rubber pads from brake and clutch levers before sound observer installation.

I did the same as Sal and purchased the inner and outer parts, but only installed the inner one.

I sold the outer one.

I just want to mention that the inner foam rubber piece is delicate and tears very easily.  It's too bad they did not embed a piece of fabric inside the rubber.

Once again Tom's comment is right on the money.  I opted to purchase and install both pieces after I first bought the car during the fix up stage. One week later I had the car in the shop for some work and the mechanic tore it up trying to remove it. Luckily, I noticed the damage right away and they eventually bought me a new one.  I like having them in place although agree they seem pricey.

I installed the inner one as well. After rebuilding my pedal box, I was glad to have something to keep the crud out of the box. I worked hard on that box!

I also installed the outer one, but not until I had taped over the service holes. Once again, to prevent intrusion of rain and debris. If someone wants in (like me?), they can just punch through the tape.

The clutch master cylinder was leaking when I bought my car and when I peeled the glued-on outer foam pedal box cover off, I found a wet rusty mess.

I'll admit I had a lot of fun welding a patch panel onto my box, but I'd rather not have to do it again.

The replacement clutch master cylinder started leaking as well and I was glad I had not installed the new outer cover I'd bought.

The inner rubber pad has elongated slits for the pedals that are left very thin and that material is the most delicate part.  I will probably glue some burlap, or something, to the top side of mine... someday.

I also taped over the rectangular hole in the bottom of the box, using aluminum foil tape.

I got a new inner one last year and it is sturdy rubber unlike the soft Foam one it replaced. Has holes to sit on top of all of the bolts pretty securely too...had to trim the slots for the pedals but works good and will stay dry being all rubber.

I put sound deadening or metal tape over the service hole (can't remember which) and reused my inner cover when I did my pedal box. I should have just welded the hole shut when I had it out of the car.

I just glued in my new outer cover on last night.  I was thinking of doing the same thing and using some sound deadening material over the holes to hopefully help seal out noise AND road junk, yet still allow access when needed.  Looking at the material and where it's exposed, I think I would probably have just used thicker sound deadening if I had it to do over....which I'm thinking I will need to do in a few years.  Hopefully by then, my knuckles will have healed and all of the 3M adhesive will have washed be out of my hair.

As for the inner cover, I had a NOS one hanging around that a friend gave me, as well as a brand new one I just ordered.  The new one does seem to be made of a denser more robust material than the older foam one is.

Mojn Jake,

please don't mind, but this picture of yours is way too perfect not to use in this context.

Here's what this (censored)(censored)(censored) outer foam pad is good for:

An awesome example. I'll never stop preaching to leave this part out.

Yeah but...you can't fault the cover because the MC leaked and wasn't fixed.  I've had my current cover in for over 8 years and it's still in great shape.  I check my MC and lines once in a while though.

That peddle box also looks like it could have been in an Eastern car where the cover and peddle box carried around a cup of salt all year round.

Maintenance is the key, IMHO.   I recently refreshed the bottom and worked around the cover. Still perfect.  It might be better rubber (closed cell) as well.Bottom Front Done3.jpg
