Looking to replace the flex disk (guibo) anything else and ?

Hey all,

turns out my guibo is F’d and I wanted to know if there is anything else that’s a good idea to replace while I’m under that area? So far I figured I’d buy a new guibo, center support bearing, e21 trans mount, new set locking hex bolts.

questions.

meyle vs genuine for the flex disk?

do people ever put the flex disk hardware (towards the rear and nut towards the front) all one way to never worry about a bolt coming undone towards the transmission?

Can I reuse the hex bolts for the e21 mount? I noticed I need to enlarge the crossmember hole but didn’t understand if that means the old hex bolts won’t work for the e21 Mount?

should I paint the driveshaft with por15?

Am I missing anything?

Hope all are staying safe!

Never all the bolts one way! Aways, always, always  alternate the bolts. Do not let the rubber twist or it will fail spectacularly!

How does the Center Support Bearing look?

your list looks good so far!

if you use new bolts and nuts and install/tq properly, the flex disk bolts will NEVER back out by themselves.

there are no "bolts" on the rubber e21 trans mount.  get new lock nuts.   the rubber mount may already come with new lock nuts.

when the DS is down, that is the time for shift linkage refresh.  check the trans shift input seal and trans output seal.  replace all the joints and bushings and the shifter cup in the shift linkage mechanism.

I wouldn't fool with the seals, the back of that tranny looks about as dry as a 40 something year old car is going to have.

If everybody in the room is thinking the same thing, then someone is not thinking.

im not sure how it necessarily looked. I wasn’t sure what to look for but I figured it needed to be replaced.

Clean out drive shaft center bearing with brake cleaner and pack it with Long-Life Grease + MoS2 (100g Tube) - Liqui Moly LM2003. also instal bump stop 26111100891 on trans output shaft before final DS installation to transmission.

Has anyone found a source for a decent- quality 4- bolt guibo recently?

I wouldn't use Meyle parts for an anchor at this point in my experience with them,

and honestly, the BMW one is a crapsoot at this point.

Coupla more thoughts...

  • Be sure and pre-load the center support bearing location--per the manual--before tightening the bolts
  • don't remove the metal band on the guibo before you install/tighten the bolts
  • +1 on avoiding angularity with the guibo.  After installing and torquing the bolts, rotate the driveshaft to make sure there's no wobble or it'll fail in 5k or so miles...(ask me how I learned this!)
  • a Bavaria rear tranny support is another option besides the E21; it's even a littler larger than the E21...just make sure whichever one you use doesn't make the transmission higher or lower than it was; see item 3 above.

I know, that's four, but all are valid.
