Caribe is one of those colors that didn't seem to age well. Of the three Caribe cars in the registry they all seem to turn a dusty bluish grey (my crudbucket included). On my entire car there was only one patch of original paint in pristine condition on the B pillar. Should be a good reference to color match against at least.

Just thinking out loud... my rear quarter patches finally arrived and body work should officially be done this weekend.

Caribe was phased out after 1967 so the “youngest” original Caribe paint is now 53 years old. And it has weathered much better than the metallic colors! But rich, deeply-saturated colors often take the biggest hits from the sun and weather.

Stick with it: it’s a rare, beautiful, and desirable color!

Below, a 1966 1600-2, from Anders’ ‘66 Bible on the U.K. forum.

Regards,

Steve

My engine bay and trunk still wear their original Caribe paint. The trunk is definitely a little darker though, perhaps just even less exposure to the elements. Whoever did the shoddy paint job on the exterior of my car in the past didn't bother stripping it, so I sometimes find original caribe paint underneath the flaking newer paint in the door jambs. It is definitely one of those colors that's hard to pinpoint. You can see in the exterior photo that the respray was a touch too light.

Don't worry I am 100% sold on painting it Caribe. I was indifferent to the color at first, but now I think it would be a crime to not paint it the original color.

What color interior are you going to do? Caribe sometimes came with two tone door panels, black/grey

Ya mine has the Black/Grey interior. It's in rough shape but not unusable.

To be perfectly honest, I've owned the car for 3 years now and its been in the bodywork/paint stage for pretty much the whole time. Moving and other life stuff caused delays. Once I finish the exterior I think I am gonna pretty much put it back together as is.... and drive it.

I do think the Saddle interior would look pretty good with Caribe.

Looks beautiful to me! I love that combo....I've toyed with spray painting my black panels to look like that.

Driving it is more important than the other stuff honestly....mine has plenty of patina at this point but that doesn't affect the drive. Just curious, what's your VIN? Original motor?

Photo is from the day I bought it. Yes original motor, trans... I am the 2nd owner. The original owner was 96 years old and gave me a pretty good history of the car.

The downside to the car is the PO was a boat guy as well, he figured fiberglass over rust was a good idea. So I had to replace, floor pans, outside corners, rockers, rear fender flares, new front fenders, new doors, spare tire well, bits of rear wheel inner wells and lastly rear quarter panels.
