Polaris Metallic: The Chosen Color?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I’ve got no dog in this hunt ?, but I wanted to point out what Archives data has revealed — in response to inquiries by @kbobwhite.

The first three 2002’s ever manufactured, VIN’s 1660001 (November 29, 1967), 1660002 (December 12, 1967), and 1600001 (December 19, 1967) were Polaris metallic (paint code 060) cars. Hmmm...

At least two of the cars, probably all three, were headed off for road tests and publications. And BMW must have had some idea that Polaris metallic placed the new 2002 in its best light. I further believe that U.S.-spec Polaris ‘02’s of this era had black all-vinyl interiors (as did Chamonix cars of this era) and that navy blue interiors only arrived during the 1968 calendar year, perhaps as late as the earliest 1969 models.

It sure makes those who purchased Polaris 2002’s look like savvy buyers... and cool, too! ?

Attached please find a photo, selected at random from this big ol’forum, of a savvy buyer’s, I mean, a cool guy’s Polaris 2002... ?

Regards,

Steve

Polaris was hip on more special BMWs than just the first 2002s. ?

And, Tom, apropos of these great photos, obviously presented free of personal bias, it appears that Polaris metallic was introduced, in 1964, as an 1800ti-only color. Just as Colorado was introduced in late 1968 as a 2002ti-only color, BMW chose their hottest 1964 model to introduce Polaris!

So the 2002 had large shoes to fill!

The color chart below dates to May 1964. And the new Polaris metalllic leads the color parade!

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

When I searched for a car in 90, Polaris was my first desire.  Ceylon was my second.  Neither were available in my area.  I reluctantly settled for a mostly rust free Inka.  It grew on me.

Not long ago I spoke to a VW exec.  He said 53% of all Volkswagens are silver.  I wouldn't be surprised if BMW has similar numbers.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
