1972 smog sticker picture

Anyone that owns a 1972 2002 that still has the smog sticker tgat you can share a picture of would be awesome! Also the silver sticker on the side i

of the drivers door if you have that too. Any help would be Greatly appreciated.

Hi, Rey,

 

The first photo is a 1972 emissions tuning sticker for a carbureted car. I refer to these stickers as “emissions tuning” stickers because they provide the tuning specs needed to meet the applicable U.S. emissions standards. The second and third photos show 1972 emissions tuning stickers for tii’s. Perhaps four or so years ago, Paul Wegweiser had the 1972 tii version reproduced by Car-Bone in Poland. Although it does not remain in production, they might retain the digital file and be able to produce additional copies easily. Might!

 

The fourth photo shows an original VIN sticker for the driver’s door of a 1972 tii — but all 1972 and 1973 ‘02’s shared the same version of this sticker. On 97% of the surviving door stickers — at least those of this particular style, which used a fugitive ink for date and VIN — the manufacturing month and year have faded, or nearly-faded, away. The fifth photo shows a newly-reproduced VIN sticker for a 1972 model, recently reproduced by Car-Bone in Poland (photo and sticker courtesy of @tomphot). And the sixth photo (an August 1983 photo of my ‘76) shows the usual placement of the VIN sticker (the additional, and adjacent, “Non-Catalyst” sticker appears only on 1976 models).

And I failed to mention that the sticker I showed previously for a carbureted 1972 (my first photo) was actually on a tii. ? And it was obviously original, suggesting that quality controls, consistency, et al, were not high priorities for the stickers!
 

But I also note that your white-on-black 1972 version has perforated stock like the black-on-silver 1972 stickers, whereas the 1973 stickers I’ve seen appear to have abandoned the perforated stock.

As some additional background, Rey... the Car-Bone advisor with whom Paul and I dealt with for our emissions tuning stickers four years ago is no longer with Car-Bone. The advisor who recently handled door VIN stickers for a number of forum members, however, is:

And just to churn things up about carbureted '72 emissions tuning stickers--and possibly relate to the two different ones illustrated--late in the 1972 model year, the factory switched from the 121ti cylinder head, coupled with the single barrel Solex carb, to the E12 cylinder head and the (much maligned) two barrel Solex carb.  The E12 head burned cleanly enough so the factory was able to eliminate the air pump, gulp valve and attendant plumbing, and for two glorious years ('73 and '74) the emissions equipment consisted of just an EGR valve and its solenoids and plumbing.  

 

So....the different stickers and specs might reflect the differences between the 121/ 1 barrel/ air pump-equipped 72's and the late 72s with E12/2 barrel and no air pump.   We should be able to verify with VINs....2583405 was the first 2 barrel-equipped US stick shift car, and 2532752 for automatics.  The last US model year '72 VINs were 2585137 and 2533173 respectively.
