Jason, thanks for your interest in Norway Camping in Chamonix 2761282!  Camping in the 2002 was great.  I’ve always been amazed at the cargo capacity of these little cars.  With the roof rack, we had more than enough room for two weeks’ camping gear, spare food and several Jerry cans of extra gasoline (and paper maps).  Two guys camping for two weeks, or four guys skiing in the Alps for a week – never a problem.  Please no comments about hygiene.  My friend took himself, his wife, two in-laws and a two-year-old to Italy for a week in their 2002. We just had different space expectations.  The other notes on the forum about sleeping in the back seat kind of scare me.  In my experience, both front seats sleep fine, but I wouldn’t want to try the back.

In this picture, all the flaps were open for unpacking and normal evening fluid checks (which is not to say this car never stranded me).  As I recall, this was our first night in-country and we were washing off a long road trip.  I was 24 years old and more interested in how the car handled and how to hook up as many driving lights as the Europeans than I was in the different kinds of door mirrors.  So I don’t really know the answer to your mirror question.  Looking at the other pictures in the Registry, they look trapezoidal to me, but I am still no mirror guru.

We stopped to see my camping buddy’s relatives in Norway, and he did not want to shame the American side of the family.  So he brought a couple of changes of “normal” street attire.  I asked him to hang them behind my seat for better visibility.  It was strawberry season in Norway, and every few miles there was a farmer's kid with a roadside stand peddling paper cones of the berries.  The stems tossed from our vent windows stained the Chamonix to a pink shade from the doors to the back of the car for much of the trip.  Great memories and great friendships.  We still get together every few years.

John

Excellent! Thank you for the details John - love it!

Please tell us more about this car! The car itself was Polaris? And, per chance, is it a 1976 model? It appears to have a red (leather?) factory interior. Do you have more photos showing the interior?

Thanks and regards,

Steve

This was a Polaris 76 with factory red leather, but as I far as I could tell from some past research, it was not one of the rumored last run of cars that were Polaris with red leather. I bought it from the original owner who special ordered it that way and they still had the original window sticker. It was a beautiful combination in my opinion. I sold it to a couple in Atlanta in the early 90s and it reappeared a couple years ago. The guy that owns it now was working on bringing it back to life and I believe he posts here occasionally. I hope he gets it back on the road because it was a unique car. I'll see if I can find some other pics of the interior.

Found the color photos of Harry Smith, 2534016. These were taken by my mom the day I graduated college, early May, 1991 North of Pittsburgh.

Still have the license plate, last registered in 1995. I’ve also had MPRESV in my M3 in Connecticut from 2001-2006 & currently in Maine from 2006.

your Malaga tii is what my 73 Malaga tii aspires to be...awesome. Too bad the mean and selfish owner (me) is planning on stripping her and painting her Chamonix

No! Why??? ?

But thanks, though the car looked amazing from day one I've earned my stripes with PB&J - pretty much every mechanical aspect of the car needed replacing, and I mean Every. Little. Thing. No regrets, I so love it... but a long road I wasn't anticipating.

Best FAQ thread in a long time, loving the old photos and wish i had more to contribute.

The below was from an East Bay drive around 2001-2002 in the Oakland Hills. As I recall, we went to Fenton’s Creamery in Oakland after the drive to gorge ourselves on lunch and ice cream.  That’s Jay Kehoe’s Inka tii with Alpina A4S behind my car, I often wonder what happened to him and hope he’s well, we had some good times.

It's the yearly Pollen storms! I live in the mountains and every spring were inundated with violent yellow pollen storms. It's terrifying if you own a dark colored car!!!.
