I keep forgetting the door latch change on ‘68 model year ‘02s! My 1560847 has the later door latches, which I suspect ALL 156xxxx and 166xxxx cars had, including the euro market ones as well. The parts data shows that all after 1533868 and 1550270 got the updated “normal” ‘02 style door latches. That appears to mean that all 156xxxx US 1600-2s got them.

Very interesting, Tom,

 

And may I note that the same car, VIN 1533868, was the first 12-volt 1600-2, manufactured August 18, 1967 (and delivered to dealer Krim in Hamburg, a Manila example). I have precious little data for right-hand-drive cars, but I’m guessing now that VIN 1550270, a right-hand drive car, might have also been the first right-hand drive 1600-2 with 12-volt electricals!


Since August is not generally a production month for BMW, I’d bet they were taking advantage of this slower time to institute some of these changes that subtly distinguish the 1967 models from the 1968 models.

The top driver's door latch picture is from my car, 1560629. The bottom picture is from an FAQ post of a 1967 02 door latch. Does anyone know whether the cracked plastic piece on my latch is replaceable/available? The passenger side 0f 1560629 is the same style, but plastic not cracked (yet).

Of course, that cracked, ivory colored plastic piece on my latch is just a cover over one of the metal lobes of the latch. I'm guessing I could make something to replace it, but it would be great if they're still available. 

 

Also, below, is the striker plate for the driver door on 1560629, built September 28, 1967. Aloha, Robert

The door latch buffer you seek is 51 21 1 809 735 and is readily available from your favorite vendor. Ne sore to get genuine BMW ones though as URO seems to

be making them now and I don’t know the quality.

We often refer to them, Robert, as “corn kernels” because.... well, I’ll let you figure that out once you’ve seen one that isn’t broken into little pieces. When they are missing, it’s well nigh impossible to get the door to close properly: it’s shocking how critical they are. It appears that the only thing keeping your driver’s door corn kernel in place is... history, and maybe a little dirt!

Yeah, I'll bet the same dirt was under Max Hoffman's fingernails! I just ordered the OEM corn kernels from Pelican. This was a timely topic--just before my buffers went South (or, my hominy turned to grits). Thanks to all, y'all!  Robert

Ray, I'll bet your car did not have these nifty side window roll-up shades. Heck, if I had known those were available, I would have never fixed my air conditioner. Which is probably what a previous owner did with this car, back in the day. Good way to combat the "greenhouse effect."

 

Seriously, has anyone ever seen roll-up shades for the door windows on an 02? I'd say they are rarer than a working York A/C compressor!

 

Seriously, you all ought to look over this "Saguaro Special" on Bring-A-Trailer. No reserve. Seems like a desert survivor!

Unfortunately, the seller does not give build record details. James Taylor says "Some cars built at the very end of 1968 also had the side reflectors"--and he meant so in the context of the front, amber reflectors. This car has rear, red reflectors. And, as I read Mike Self's tutorial on reflectors, these should not be on a 1968 car. 

 

Anyway, this one is pretty interesting, and just two numbers off of Ray's old car. Aloha, Robert
