Is this the best year overall?

Yes, of course. It almost goes without saying... ?

Unless you live in California and must pass emissions testing biannually. Then perhaps not... ?

Welcome!

Below: my purchased-new example of the “best year overall”! My nickname for her just happens to be “Beste Jahr”. My ‘73, however, is quite jealous; but I’ve heard from reputable sources that ‘73 is the “best year overall, not counting ‘76”! ?

Regards,

Steve

1976 who has one. Is this the best year overall?

Not in California, has to pass smog still as far as I know so they can be purchased inexpensively there.

1973 is the best year of 2002 according to feedback on here.

I drove a '73 as my only car for 34 years.  Now I have a '70 and a '74tii.  I do not think the '73 or any particular year is the best.  I think all years are tied for Best.  Why do we keep asking this question?

OK, T.sandin,

New member coaching: the title of the thread should describe the topic you wish to discuss, not your name. And you’re allowed to embellish, but just a bit.

So, for this, I’d recommend something like:

1976: 2002 Perfection? or

1976: Hottest Year on Record?

Both of these titles would draw far more hits, and you could readily ignore ridiculous posts such as my own. You’ve probably stepped over the “embellishment line”, however, with:

Happy to See My ‘76? Or Is That a Shiftknob in Your Pocket?

I do, however, own a 1976 2002 that I purchased new. It’s a very good ‘02, but there is no “best year”. There are better examples of ‘02’s, and “less-better” examples of ‘02’s, but no year is best. And that is truly my opinion. I’ve owned ‘67, ‘70, ‘73, and ‘76 examples.

Regards,

Steve

+1 --and not just because I have one.  The original 2002 guru, Michel Poteau (BMw CCA member #3) wrote this 25+ years ago for the following reasons:

  • last year for the original round taillight design
  • fewest emission add-ons:  due to the clean-burning characteristics of the E12 head, the air pump, gulp valve etc was all eliminated.  Basically the only thing left was the EGR system
  • weighed nearly 200 lbs less than subsequent square tail light cars
  • (slightly) spaced out bumpers with stronger brackets provided at least a little more protection than the 68-72 cars, whose bumpers were nearly flush with the bodywork, without the weight and aesthetic penalties of the squarelight 5 mph bumpers
  • the rapidly rising mark-to-dollar balance hadn't affected quality of trim; still had the superior quality vinyl upholstery and multi-piece carpets

Drawbacks:

  • taller springs to meet bumper height requirements
  • poorer quality gummihaar seat stuffing when compared to earlier cars
  • that terrible Solex two barrel carburetor

But Michel also said the the 76s were the best of the squarelights, since they had finally worked (most of) the bugs out of the emission system (save the thermal reactor!), and regained some of the performance lost from the emissions stuff by switching to a 3.90 diff.  Of course back then all CA 2002s had to pass emissions, so that wasn't a factor...

Emissions systems?  The ‘74 tii met emissions specs without smog gear and ran head to head with a TransAm in the quarter mile.  Unless there was a bend in the quarter mile, in which case it waved to the TransAm in the rear view mirror.

The '73 tii did it better, and with more attractive taillights.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
