Wowzas! How does that happen?

From your photo, it looks like the nose of the crank is off-center or bent relative to the front seal/ timing cover hole... Am i right?

Cuz that's sure what it looks like...

NO oil, Engine seize, Check dipstick, I'd be willing to bet empty or close to it

rather than "no oil", i would say "no oil PRESSURE"....which, since the warning light was left unfixed, was not detected.  no oil to bearings, crank bearing shells seized/disintegrated.  remains of the shells will be in the bottom of the oil pan.

If the engine failed internally (yea, it did), a look at the oil should tell you that. Seen it many times on aircraft piston engines.

Silver looking oil, filters packed with metal and once, a direct reading oil pressure gauge stopped working when it clogged up with debris from the disintegrating engine.

Is that E21 engine you have lying around a 2 liter?  Just sayin....

Drain the oil, it may have all types of metal shavings in it if the engine seized. Put it in 2nd gear and try pushing the car to turn the engine. If it doesn't turn, it's seized. Those oil pressure lights fail because of the contacts on the instrument cluster. I reach behind my cluster all the time to get it to work. Keep your fingers crossed that it's only the pulley.

It is seized, I know that. The oil on the dipstick looks normal, but I don’t know if you’d be able to tell by just the dipstick. I’ll be taking the whole thing apart when I find the time.

the e21 engine isn’t a 2 liter which is why I’m hesitant use it, because I’ll want to change It again if I do.

i have a couple engine blocks, but I don’t know how long they’ve been sitting or how the previous stored them, so I’d need to get them checked I think

Paul W offers some insight regarding possible failures other than lack of oil and/or oil pressure. ^^^^

Although there is some debate regarding the use of grease on crankshaft oil seals, consider that some grease may not be seal (or otter) compatible.

Second picture you posted is mine from my super-seized 69 engine.

"Do you want to super- seize that?"

No, thanks, regular seize is fine.

That thing is all done.  Just find a used engine and swap it in.  Real easy to do an engine swap on these cars, a novice should be able to pull it off fairly easily over a weekend or two. Good luck!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
