I was fascinated by the group's depth of knowledge on a vehicle based on just a VIN number as based on this thread.

I'm new to this forum and am looking to purchase a 71 2002 Tii VIN 2705664 originally from Italy.  It is being restored at this time but no other background info.  Was hoping if anyone has additional info like they did for VIN 2716948.   Thanks in advance.

PS. Being new to this forum, I mistakenly posted to the wrong discussion group earlier.

Start by sending an email, with the car’s VIN, to BMW Group Archives, requesting their data on the car. The email address is info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com. This will give you basic data such as the car’s manufacturing date, the date the car was legally delivered to an importer, or physically delivered to a dealership, the sub-model (2002tii for you), the market (Euro for you), factory color, paint code. There is no charge.

An original engine has the same engine number as the car’s VIN. If your car’s engine number is not the same as the VIN — i.e., the engine has been swapped post-factory — send the engine number to BMW Group Archives along with the VIN, and learn where the engine originated.

Start with this data. Google the VIN on various sites. You never know what might pop up.

Publish the Archives data here and place the car into this forum’s Register.

Below is the entry produced by the VIN decoder offered by The BMW 2002 Car Club of Columbia. While it is accurate, it is non-specific. Thus, the manufacturing date is a range, not a day: April to December 1971, April 1971 marking the beginning of tii production.

And, oh yeah, you must post photos or we will never believe that your car exists... ??

Regards,

Steve

Thank you Steve.  Car is in the process of being reassembled so no pictures yet!!

BTW, I have been reading your other posts regarding the below wheels.   The first and third one is being offered to me on the car.  The first one you said is not OEM and you have the second one in your car.   Any info on the third one?

Wow: three great period alloy options here! All were manufactured by F.P.S., an Italian rim manufacturer that made many of BMW’s factory and dealer-option rims.

F.P.S. stands for Fratelli Pedrini Sarezzo. All are in our Wheels Database!

The last one pictured above is the Italian Market Dealer Option alloy, a 5 1/2” x 13” rim. Those would be my first choice for an Italian-delivery ‘02!

I might have missed this, but where do you live? As the owner of another 1971 2002tii in the process of a restoration Ive been through it tracking down all the previous owners and history on the car. Who is offering you the choices of the wheels - I am always interested in more Italian market 2002 wheel options so if you pass on a set I would be interested in the leftovers.

Did you run the VIN to get the basics on your Tii?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
