You build up the existing with foam or replace it altogether.

The "tell"of a poor quality job is that most upholstery people overstuff the seat making the edges look "rounded"....They do that with stock '02 seats as well. The edges at the seams should be defined and crisp.

One reason the Gummihair breaks down, is that it in reality, not horse hair (maybe originally,) but coconut fibers.

Horsehair, or whatever the heck is called “horsehair” in 2020, is still used by upholstery shops in the restoration of antique furniture. It comes in un-molded slabs that can be sculpted into formed pads. Find an upholstery shop that does restoration of high-end antique furniture.

Steve

For the REALLY research adventurer, there is a company in Mexico that makes the Mercedes pads, though a such a short run "might" be cost prohibitive, and of course a sample would need to be had.

Go forth and research!

That is why my alternative, also given a pattern is to use similar foam as say, the E30 sport seats,  and make yer own.

but I am not at that stage yet.

Back in the mid-90's I bought a seat cushion from Oregon Aero. I was a student pilot at the time and the seats in a 40 yr old Cessna are at least as clapped out as those in an '02. I also used the cushion in the '72. It was excellent. That cushion, now 20+ yrs old is in my '08 Tacoma. It is beat, but still does its thing. They are not inexpensive. I just bought a new one for my short 5-2 daughter and it was $200. Yes, you want your seats done to factory spec but in the mean time with this cushion you can have an excellent seating position while you work it out. I highly recommend them.

I've resorted to foam, for one area,  and otherwise kept all the original horse hair. ?

Thank you for all the excellent advice as always. This community is such a blessing in the church of high performance. This community is such a blessing in the church of high performance.

I used all new factory vinyl as recommended by Lars with the appropriate numbers in the 2002 Turbo seat thread. I had them do transverse cross stitching on the center sections to get it as close as possible to original. The old heat and Baust tight vinyl is not available. I am pleased with the results, as good as could be expected in a difficult situation.

?Best regards, I will send some pictures along soon with them installed in the car

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
