Alternator wiring help

Recommended Posts

I am helping a friend sort out a new to him '74 2002.  The wiring is the most janky and messed up I've seen in a long time.  First up for your review is the alternator, it has what looks like a standard Bosch type ALX alternator with a built in regulator.  There are only 2 wires attached to it as seen.  No D+ wire connection for the idiot light that I can see.  The alternator does not show any charging voltage when the engine is running with a voltmeter on the batt terminals.  I am going to take it to be tested but have a few questions:

What are the connections supposed to be?  On my car all I have is the B+ cable to the battery and the D+ wire to the old regulator harness for the idiot light (and ground).  This alternator has 2 large gauge wires to the right 2 terminals (see pic) and no wire to the D+ (but has a ground wire).  Could the lack of a D+ prevent the alternator from exciting and kicking in?  Is the D+ tab the far left of the 3 tabs or the one below where it says D+ on the case?  Can anyone ID the 2 wires connected to the alternator, what should be connected, etc?  The 2 wires connected to the alternator go into the harness along with the wire to the solenoid.  Thanks.

Unfortunately no markings remain on the case.  It appears those 2 terminals are connected, there is continuity between them.  So it looks like I should reinstall and run a jumper D+ wire from the alternator to the old regulator D+ harness and see what happens.

Probably because the bolts thread into the case and don't need nuts to tighten

I guess if the thing isn't falling apart, there is no issue, but sure looks odd with nothing on those threaded ends. Doesn't look like any old alt I've seen.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
