Pop-up sunroof wind deflectors--2002

For those of you wondering what the pop-up wind deflector that was (apparently) either standard or an option on Euro cars, but probably not on US spec cars, here's what they looked like--from a 1970 Porsche 911 accessory catalog.  The Porsche deflector fits a 2002 sunroof opening perfectly--the trick these days is finding one in a salvage yard.  Click on the ppt link for a larger picture...

From what I recall from 15 years ago, Volvo 240s used a similar system, but had a wider sunroof.

If one were to cut, shorten and weld that deflector, it worked, I think.  I never tried it.

Cleaver device those selectors, I just look forward to the wind in my hair. I did have friend create some of the plastic fixture plugs that insert into the aluminum. My old ones were crumbling. And yes they were printed in an "opaque" plastic.

I'm familiar with the pop-up style deflector, but don't recognize these pieces - where do they fit?  Thanks!

Stan sells the golde deflectors here, or at least the new springs, hinges and plastic blocks.  And for much less than the Sierra Madre Collection does for Porsches.

Stan's repro Golde wind deflectors have aluminum billet hinges which are far superior to the white pot-metal originals. Last I knew he had few complete sets, a few spare springs & plastic hinge tabs.

Those are the hinge blanks for cars without the Golde deflector. They are usually yellowish plastic.

Not sure if they were ever offered as an accessory, but the Mercury Capri had a Golde brand manual crank sunroof that looks very similar to the 2002.

Loved the ‘70’s Capri’s, Jim!

Of course, finding one in a salvage yard today is probably a rare occurrence.

Best regards,

Steve

When I bought my ‘73 in 2014, the sunroof was broken, stuck in the closed position: it probably hadn’t been opened since the car’s Inka days! When Korman disassembled it, out popped a deflector.

Win! ?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
