Hey Hey Hey.....watch it now....

Not to bring down the tiis, but they have a few nice things brought over from the 02s.

jlenham,

Again, welcome.  We wish you good luck, fun, and safety with your new project.  You will like those tail lights.  Promise.

As I drove a '73 roundie daily for 34 years as virtually my only car, I thought, "Rectangular tail lights?  Not for me."  Now, I am happy to have an '02 of each type, and to have (imaginary) Emeritus status in the Roundie Group and Progressive status in the (imaginary) Rectangularie Group.

Nick et al. Above,

Maybe some day...a '74 tii Group for the few of us...naaahhh...not worth the trouble.  Let us joyfully wallow in the depths of the luxurious wonderment of all the cars supported by 2002FAQ and appreciate the fact that we did not...settle.*

* Full Disclosure:  My loins still lust for an older 911, a CS of any displacement, a Sunbeam Tiger, a '74 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000, a '50's Ford pickup, a '66 Plymouth Satellite, or replacements for my long-lost '73 Capri or '64 Karmann Ghia.  Heck, I'd love to have any car or truck with multiple analog gauges and/or with a real metal dashboard.

image.png.cb10f65a9abbcfbab4d69580cdfb54e0.pngI don't think I've ever seen a crossed-out VIN before!  Wonder what the story is behind that.  It appears the riveted VIN plate matches the right-hand number but those plates can be changed.  What does the plate on the steering column say.  Hopefully the 2377 number matches the title...

Mike,

This is the third factory “VIN correction” of this type I’ve seen. All three used the VIN that was not crossed out for the riveted-on tags, the door label, title, etc.

I’d guess the factory viewed this as the only honest and “complete disclosure” approach to correct mistakes made with the stamped chassis VIN’s.

Best regards,

Steve

as an interesting data point, Les' database for '74 tii's ends at  27829xx and begins again at 27835xx (nothing in between). McCartney's book lists the last tii made as 2782928. Oddly Les shows 2 x 27835xx and 2 x 2786xxx as '74 tii's.  I can find no record of BMW producing 27833xx. Looks like Hans grabbed the wrong die!

Cheers,

Ray

It's the defacto standard.  If you don't own one, you are inferior.  But notice tii owners don't go out when it rains for fear of water getting up the nose.

I thought the factory stopped making 02's at the end of the 73 model year

Almost right Mike, at the end of the 73 model they stopped practicing making 02s and went with the perfected cars.

... Original color (and what is left on the car) is anthrazitgrau, interior is tan.

Great resources for the fuel injection, thanks!

I will attach a few more pictures here, but happy to provide specific photos too.

Let the debate begin on the struck through VIN on the body!  All the other VIN numbers (steering column, engine block, door sticker and riveted plate match)Cheers,

My best buddy’s father bought a new 2002 in ‘76: Anthrazitgrau-metallic with Beige (a.k.a., Nylon Brown) interior. To this day, my buddy and I agree that this is perhaps the classiest exterior-interior combination ever offered for a square taillight ‘02, exceeding even the stunning Polaris-metallic with Navy Blue combo! ? What? I was thinking that, but I wasn’t supposed to actually say it! ?

VIN 2782377 was manufactured in July 1974, the 2,377th U.S.-spec 1974 model tii built. I don’t have my paint and upholstery brochures with me, but I seem to recall that Anthrazitgrau-metallic was introduced mid-way through the 1974 model year.

And it’s still wearing a correct trap(azoid) mirror!

Below, the second-most classy color combination for a square taillight... ?

Steve

The last USA '74tii VIN was 2782928.

I have several VINs higher that I have recorded but assume they were stated in error by the Owners/Sellers.

So, in theory, the crossed out VIN 2783377 was never used.

Cheers,

I've not seen a crossed out factory VIN. I like it.

Fun to think about what happened right at that spot 46 years ago - a metal smith line worker straightening up with a hammer and a die, checking the number on the sheet and then saying "@$#@%!". Then telling his/her supervisor and the decision to strike it out, then the paperwork, etc...

I thought the factory stopped making 02's at the end of the 73 model year

Nope. From BMW:

"The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2780188 was manufactured on January 11th, 1974 and delivered on January 22nd, 1974 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060."

I would add that the uber rare Polaris with Beige (a.k.a Nylon Brown) interior, the only one that is known to exist, is the classiest exterior-interiror combination. ?

I've also seen a scratched out VIN before like this. Clearly Dieter was hung over.

With of course, the so-rare-nobody’s-seen-them factory black rims, making your tii One of None! ?

It was fairly exciting to rub through the layers of oil on the engine block to get to the VIN stamp there and find that it matched.

Love all the comments.  I will report back with progress updates.  Next weekends goal is to pull the gas tank and purge all the old fuel in the system.

As an aside, my car also came with no records until....

I removed the glove compartment getting the car stripped for paint and lo and behold, all sorts of stuff had fallen behind it. Helped me located the 1st and second owner, some jazz cassettes and a 40 year old box of Tiparillos as well.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
