So as not to confuse future generations of ‘02 lovers, I’d note that the following statement from the listing actually understates the rarity of 1968 (first year) 2002’s.

 

1 of only 4,489 of the first production year 1968 BMW 2002’s produced

 

The model years, however, generally run from approximately September 1 to approximately August 31, 4 months out-of-synch with the calendar year. The number 4,489 — my records show 4,491, difference not material — represents the number of 2002’s manufactured during the 1968 calendar year, the basis for BMW Archives’ records for these years. But only 2,857 of these cars were U.S. 1968 models. The remainder, 1,634, according to my records, were U.S. 1969 models.

From info I got from I know not where (?), 1660001 & 1660002 were manufactured in 1967, so perhaps the Seller's count of 4489 is correct for Jan thru Dec '68.

Wasn't this car recently listed (I think on Ebay) or it's been for sale numerous times in recent times...

Too bad it has a replacement engine. My parents had a '68 (might have been a '69) in Granada that they got rid of long before they had kids - that's my unicorn...
