Hi all.

While the block and pistons are at the machinist, I’ve been ordering parts and cleaning stuff up. Will post pics soon.

Having a hard time finding an BMW oil pump chain. Seems like my options are

1. Purchase wider-than-spec Iwis or Febi chain

2. I think I can find a BMW split chain with master link

3. Use my old chain and shim it up.. a lot

Anyone know how I can get my hands on a BMW chain these days?

Also, what do you guys think of the wear on my cam sprocket?

New one of these is pretty pricey, unfortunately

Starting to quote myself..out of control

New BMW chains, either split or endless, are nowhere to be found. So am stuck with a new chain of the wrong size (with some use by folks here) or reuse of my old chain with new pump (and shimmed).

What would the ‘02 wizards do? ?

I would not suggest #1.

For what it’s worth, I will sometimes use a ‘pre-stretched’ chain on the race engines, shimming as needed.

In your case, the cost of shims might grow... -KB

What swayed me was info from a couple of FAQ members that have installed 10:1 pistons with 121 heads and a discussion with a head mechanic at a shop that has installed dozens of these over the years. In summary, satisfied drivers, with no reported detonation issues that I could find when using 93 gas, which is plentiful in the eastern US.

I'm limited to 91 Octane, my machine shop cut down my 10/1 pistons to 9.5/1 to avoid fueling issues

chains do not stretch, they wear  a good  friend of mine just bought the correct chain from bmw na, a low milage chain will work, the shims are nla, thats why I save them,  I have never seen a broken oil pump chain in a m10, lots of bad chains and gears in later splined pumps if you can't find it I might have one  Bruce

the only way to ck a sprocket is compare it to a new or low milage sprocket, I have lightened and advanced/retard stock oem gears, not that chinese pos that ireland sells, tried one was not the correct size could not get it on to the cam sent it back.    yours has wear,  which   means the crank gear needs replacement, it wears twice the rate, if you put a new chain on these, ck where the tensioner rail ends up with  light pressure in the front cover/tenioner cavity, too much wear it will be close to bottom out to the cover

compare the ends of the teeth they should have a flat section at the point, same with the crank gear,

Thanks Bruce. Getting new crank and camshaft sprockets.

Hopefully will be putting everything together soon.

Very very nice, Vince!

Did you say “cad plater”? I’ve been looking for a NY or NJ plater since we returned from Atlanta. Name and town of yours? Bona fide yellow cadmium or yellow zinc? Either would be great; actual cadmium would be even better!

Best regards,

Steve

Yep, real deal. Did mine in yellow cadmium. Was surprised to see a place like this so close to me. They’ve been in Montclair NJ for 50 years.

Wow, Vince!

I’ll PM you when I pull a load together for plating (I believe I have half a load ready to go.).

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

Well, it's New Jersey, so, anything goes.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
