I am not a BMW guy, but I need a project that will be worthwhile to do in the long run. What did I find here? You will have to tell me, because I don't know. Appreciate any advice that pops up.

1972 BMW 1602. Serial # 1572273. Mileage indicated 76,300. Ask price $7,500. Located in Tehachapi, Ca 93561.

I suddenly occurs to me that I don't know how to post pictures here. I'll just submit this and see what happens

Do you weld? :)

You'll need to look more closely at the rockers and shock towers and other sheet metal.

That said, it doesn't look all that bad based on the very limited pics.

The motor temp sender is disconnected....

Does it run and drive?  The debris stuck under the hood suggests to me a car that hasn’t been run in some time. If so, $7,500 sounds like a lot of money. How long as it been parked over bare earth? $7,500 is again sounding like a lot of money!

I’d add that it’s not a 1972 model.  The lack of knee moldings, a long-tail rear bumper, and rub strips on the bumper announce it was manufactured before April 1971, when the face-lifted design know as the Modell 71 appeared. My records and the VIN Decoder offered by the BMW 2002 Car Club of Columbia suggest a late 1970 manufacturing date, some time after May 1970. But I’m unable to pinpoint the date.

It’s probably an early 1971, if it’s not a late 1970 model.

Anyway, the difference in model years shouldn’t affect the value in any way.

Regards,

Steve

The dash is post 71 refresh though. I have early 71, it has a 3 piece dash. This one here doesn't.

Although I agree, the early VIN indicates pre 71 model. Probably somebody has already been there for some works before.

Also make sure to check under the spare tire for rust holes. I'd say spare tire well is good indicator of the condition of the sheet metal overall. Or at least first place I'd look on these 02-s. Water tends to collect there and rust through.

Also:

* Rockers seem to have a rusted the metal through from the bottom. (kinda wavy on the photos)

* Front and rear windshields are missing chrome locking strips

* A small hole/spot in the drivers side door (bottom left)

* What I see here is that someone has most likely abused this at some point of its life - the added front piece down metal for looks, the steering wheel, the carb etc. But you shouldn't be bothered with mechanical aspect of the car, this is still relatively cheap to fix and maintain. Bodywork is the big killer on these. If the body is really really solid, I'd say it's easily worth the asking price.

Steve is correct WRT the year--gotta be a '71, the last year they were sold in the US--and only for part of the year.  It's one of the last thousand or so US spec 1600s (highest VIN is 1573162).  Kinda hard to tell if it has any of the "modell 71" characteristics (black vs silver dollar instruments, for example) but it does seem to have a long console.  We've determined over the years that the modell 71 changes were phased in over a period of time, not all at once.  Hard to tell with this one, though.

Does the engine # match the car's VIN?  For it to be a 1600 engine it needs to begin with 156 or 157xxxx; a 166/167/257/258/259 will indicate a roundie 2002 engine.

Good luck

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
