Other than the rear quarter it looks super straight.  Definitely a keeper.

Love the patina, just clean it up and roll with it.

Can't decide if it's dirty Chamonix or faded and chalky Nevada.  Regardless, I'll bet that paint will clean up remarkably with some attention and elbow grease.

FYI, you can buy patch panels for the rear quarter wheel opening lips, or you can patch the bad spot on your car by cutting the appropriate piece from an otherwise rusted or damaged front fender...

Keep us apprised.

Looking at the dirt line mark on the tire it’s obvious the car has been sitting a long time. So use all pre caution of changing old fluids etc before attempting a crank. Also notice the 13x5 wheels which were ti and tii only specific. Really cool car and looks like a Nevada.

I’m throwing Sahara into the potential color lottery... ?

But I wouldn’t mind Nevada, not at all... ?

Possibly, Resra. But these could also be the original 4.5” rims. The post-factory 4.5”-to-5” swap was common from 1972 on (because the tii brought the 5”ers to the U.S.) but these don’t appear to have that extra .5” of “dish”.

Best regards,

Steve

Hah. You should look at his other post where the motor is in pieces in the engine bay. She ain't crankin' for nuthin :)

But I agree with all, that body is clean minus the minor damage, which is totally fixable. You found a good one!

VIN 2573090 is a “late 1971” — late because If represents the facelift that occurred in April 1971, mid-model year. ‘02’s produced before this facelift are “pre-Modell 71”. ‘02’s produced after the facelift, such as yours, are Modell 71’s. I’d estimate that your car was manufactured in April or May 1971.

Send an email to BMW Group Archives with your car’s VIN and request their data on the car (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). There is no charge and you’ll generally receive a reply within two business days. They will provide the actual manufacturing date, the date that legal title transferred from BMW AG to Hoffman Motors, and the factory exterior color (Nevada, based on what appears to be an original paint sticker).

Regards,

Steve

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
