Formal introduction - my return to an '02

I just joined earlier this month, though I have been a lurker for a few years.  My journey into BMWs began as a freshman in college with my purchase of a R/60US motorcycle.  The next year I drove by a '73 Atlantic Blue 2002 that had a for sale sign on it; I took it for a drive and fell immediately in love.  I did what I had to to buy that car, including doing a price vs retained value analysis for my father of this '02 vs a same year, similar price Lincoln Continental .  I convinced him that though it was expensive, it was a better value that the American luxury car - so he co-signed my first car loan and it was mine (ownership shared with the  local bank for for 3 years, of course!)  I drove it through college and graduate school - till it rusted out from under me due my year round use in the Western Carolina mountains!

Since then I have owned various Beemers and Bimmers.  Two R60/USs - 2 black and one rare granada red - an R75/5, R80GS, the '02, a Bavaria (damned auto), 325e, and a 533i.  All are gone - my motorcycling days are finished due to a nasty crash (Harley Road King) and my finally realizing that I am not invincible,  but I always wanted another 2002

So finally, last week I went for it and closed a long distance deal on a very nice '74 tii, thanks in part to this forum and advice a informal checks by a member local to the car who checked with his acquaintances about the seller and the car.  (Many here have probably seen the car advertised, so I steel myself for additional insight! )  I believe it needs little immediate attention - other than a sunroof adjustment and maybe an alignment.  I am waiting for it to be transported to me here in CT and it will be a long 3-4 weeks I believe!

Anyway, I look forward to getting back into the community and learning where to locate parts as needed - my go to place was always Karzundpartz in Greensboro NC, for my '02,  so that indicates how long i have been out of the loop!  Anyway I'll try to post a couple of pictures - '73 pics are from around 1979 or 1980, when I was at Appalachian State University in Boone. NC.

Thanks for creating such an impressive community!

Welcome back to the '02 fraternity/sorority--and start making plans for Mid America in April and/or Vintage in May to meet some of your fellow 02ers.  Mid America is an all-2002 gathering in Eureka Springs AR, and we do have folks that come from New England (and California!).  Vintage is in Asheville NC, not too far from where you owned your first one.

Lotsa good advice here on the FAQ--good US parts sources are Blunttech and Maxmillian; it's amazing what you can still get for our cars--some stuff is pricey, but at least it's not NLA.  Don't be shy about asking questions as you re-learn '02s--plenty folks on the FAQ with in-depth knowledge...

cheers

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
