I did mine not that long ago and taking the driveshafts off is easy enough and overhauling and re-greasing the joint is a pretty cool project ... messy but cool.

It’s worth journeying through the various how-to’s you find on the subject - whilst they repeat the same basic steps, often each writer adds an experience they had which you might encounter.

This video - in two parts is pretty useful also.

Be very careful about rounding off the internal hex on the screws, aka the Allen head.   Clean them out first and make sure you have a good tight fit with the wrench or key fully seated.   Otherwise you will be trying to turn them with vice grips or cutting the heads off.

Most times a light tap of a hammer seating the hex socket works wonders BEFORE you strip it.

 

Extra credit for using a long shank hex socket, ball socket, not so much.

I've gotta switch to those before I install mine. 

 

OP - if you're replacing the boot for sure take the time to take the rest apart and get fresh grease in there.  It looks scarier than it is.  This place is amazing for the resources and help.  Here's some photos of my E21 setup for reference/inspiration.

Its actually pretty therapeutic pulling it apart and then putting it all back together, nice and clean, new grease, clamps, etc.

 

If you follow the how-to's and the vids you really can't go wrong and you never have to look at those driveshafts again ... well not for a long time anyway. No matter how far you go, you'll need to re-grease the joints for the new boots - so have heaps of disposable paper towels available as it is one of the messiest jobs on any car you'll do.

 

Here's mine just before I started to reassemble - the clock is to "time" how fast I could do it ?

The inner ball race is directional dependent.  Take specific note of which way it came off and replace later the same direction.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.
