Rim paint? Rustoleum "Dull Aluminum".  The car is painted "006" Sahara which was introduced in 1970, in 1966 - 1970, Sahara paint was code "843" according to PaintRef.com (https://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?make=BMW&year=1966&con=ky&rows=50).  It looks beautiful in fresh Sahara.

Hmm...

 

The November 1968 paint and upholstery brochure shows Sahara as “06” (two photos below). If you receive a data dump from BMW Group Archives for a 1966 through 1970 ‘02, it will show Sahara as paint code “006”. For instance:

 

“The BMW 1600 VIN 1527753 was manufactured on June 06th, 1967 and delivered on June 20th, 1967 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Sahara, paint code 006.“

 

Lastly, and critically, that three-digit code, “843”, is unlike any paint codes of the ‘02 era: they were one and two digit codes, not counting any preceding zeros. So that’s a modern code, certainly not of the 1966-70 time period.

 

With this said, is that 843 code telling us something? Just as Chamonix was re-formulated (to be more creamy... or was it less creamy?) without changing the factory’s paint code, was Sahara re-formulated ca. 1970? Notwithstanding the possibility that PaintRef.com is wrong, have we been missing a color change effecting Sahara? I don’t dismiss the possibility, especially since I believe the Chamonix re-formulation occurred at a somewhat similar time.

I don't either, especially Polaris that has had multiple re-formulations since it's introduction.  Early Polaris, "7054" looked flat and grey compared to Polaris "7058" and Polaris "060".  I believe "060" went through multiple re-formulations until it finally ended up as Polaris "900" on the BMW 320i and other later BMW Models.

And despite at least three (self-destructing) Polaris formulations used during the ‘02 era (1966-76), BMW used paint code 060 throughout that period. I believe 058 was the code from Polaris’s introduction in 1964 until 1966. Below, Polaris’s introduction in 1964: only available on the 1800ti !


There must have been a distinction between when a re-formulation (a.) warranted a new paint code or (b.) could continue under the existing code.

For some reason I was not able to delete my sideways photo, but my text was removed instead. I was curious what color your wheels were.. I have painted wheels in the past Polaris silver and had this can leftover. I was happy with the results.  Yours look really nice, and was interested to know what color you used. Thank you.
