VintageAutobahn

Recommended Posts

Price: $950
Location: Portland, Oregon

Description:

I have a 3.91 limited slip differential from an e21 for sale. This unit has been tested and inspected, locks up and is in good used condition. I striped and painted the housing with a chassis black enamel when I was going to use this in one of my cars. Since other projects are calling my name at the moment it is available for sale. $950 plus shipping, local sale preferred but not required if you cover the shipping cost.

Nice paint job.

Metric Mechanic will sell you a completely rebuilt LSD with gearing of your choice for just a little more money.

With a warranty.

Well, let’s at least put some actual numbers on “a little more money”. As of the March 2018 price sheet below, a rebuilt Metric Mechanic LSD was $1,895 ($1,295 rebuilding charge plus a $600 core deposit if you’re not bringing them your LSD to rebuild). I’d perhaps describe $1,895 as “twice the money”. Given that the supply of e21 LSD cores is drying up, that $600 core charge is looking pretty darned attractive if it still applies today...

Regards,

Steve

Either option will work.

Thanks for updating my figures. I stand corrected.

i just looked at my receipt. I was remembering $1595 as the total cost.  Not considering the core deposit or installation.

i paid $1595 for a rebuilt and warranted VLS differential, a 500 core deposit, plus installation at Metric Mechanic.

Great folks to deal with!

Sort of difficult to compare the two, but I would say the price difference for rebuild from Metric Mechanic is substantially more than “a little bit”.

On top of that this is not a core, but a ready to install limited slip diff with good lockup. Why rebuild it or pay more for a rebuilt unit, if you can have a good one for less than half the price? Maybe I’m just cheap, but I would prefer a good used unit when I’m footing the bill.

We are always willing to send a replacement or refund if a part is not as described, that sounds like a warranty to me! With all that said,  I am open to reasonable offers on this unit. I would like to find a good home for it as I will not be needing it any time soon.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
