1976 Chamonix, 5-Speed, Recaros, BBS

Price: $100
Location: Inglewood, CA

Description:

I have an older neighbor who isnt too tech savvy and is thinking about selling this car. Why? Because its a '76 and we live in California. Its a solid car. Original Chamonix color, though it looks like its been partially resprayed, if not entirely. Interior has redone Recaros with matching rear seat. Factory A/C car ( looks factory anyways) and overall in decent condition. Its been sitting, but it fired up right away after the floats were full of fuel. Nice basketweave BBSs also. He didnt mention a price, because he didnt really seem like he had thought much about it, just said "it wont be cheap" but who knows what that actually means. I figured I would post it here to get an idea of what the FAQ can estimate it to be worth. I might have it go to BaT if they will accept it and he wants to deal with it. Id rather it goes to someone here, than to deal with that headache.

Just make sure you know what YOU will be getting saddled with if you list it on BaT for him. Right or wrong, buyers over there expect a very responsive seller to answer any questions, some reasonable, most unreasonable, but expected. Nice cars do nice money over there, but make sure you don’t put in a ton of effort to have the car not meet some ridiculous reserve that he’s set. Good luck.

Im on Bring a Trailer daily now as my entertainment lol ... I know what works and what doesnt. My biggest issue would be getting the reserve to what he wants. Its a pretty nice car. I just dont know what one of these commands being a 76, but also having some choice mods, like the 5-speed, the Recaros and a desirable color.

Thoughts?

A/C was a dealer/port installed option, and was either a Behr or a Frigiking. You have the Behr unit in there. That center console is actually all that most people are looking for. Downstream they’ll substitute in some newer components. (Or, some will yank it all from the car. Even at its best, in California, the car won’t get chilly at any point.) If you turn the heat off, and the fan blows on the A/C, you’re good.

Heya from R3v...what is he looking to get for it? Does it run / issues / rust / etc?

Does he want to trade for my e30??? ;)

He definitely doesnt want an E30, I had mine with me and he said it was too new haha

Im not sure what he's looking to get, nor what is remotely fair. I dont think $5k will do it, and I think $10k might be pushing it for a 76, BUT it has a LOT of goodies and seems to be a solid runner. Like I said, it had been sitting for months before I asked him to fire it up. He put the key in and after pumping the gas pedal a few times it fired up.

Im guessing he wants $10k if not more... no idea how accurate any of that is, especially since he thinks it costs $100k for a 914 with a 6 conversion (half that for a mint one)

Wasnt Clardy a future duplication of the older Frigiking? I believe the engineers started a new company, or something. Either way, I think the Clardy was an aftermarket unit, a few years later, whereas the other two were available, installed, when the car got to you at your dealer.

By saying “he’s good,” I was saying that if someone needs air conditioning, they’re unlikely to look at a nonfunctional compressor and have a problem with that. The evaporater is there, which is the hardest thing to retrofit with a whole new console. (It’s not hard, but requires you to find one [the hardest part], mount it, and drill into the firewall. If the original stuff is all there, with the other parts inside the engine bay broken, it’s easier to source and replace those parts with newer, upgraded, equipment.

If that car cleans up the way it looks like it should, the drivetrain is good, minimal rust, and he puts on new tires, I don’t think $10K would be a problem if someone can drive it away. (That’s a handful of assumptions.) $15K wouldn’t surprise me. Add rust or drivetrain issues and you’ve got a big variable.

I think region more or less dictated which of the 3 brands got installed.

OK, I think we are clear on the A/C...

Common rust spots to take pics of besides the rear shock towers? I want to document this good to let the pics do the talking

The rockers all around the car. (Basically anywhere water can pool, inside a panel, and cause rust. Look for bubbles in the paint that hint at rust.) Wheel arches. Pull out the spare tire and take a pic of the well and try to get as much of the gas tank as you can.) If you can get under the car to get the frame rails, that’ll help, too. I assume you’re not going to pull up the carpet, but footwells have been known to rust, on occasion. Actually, I’m sure there’s a post on here, somewhere, listing all of the sweet spots.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
