off. Even around town my 1st gear shifting is at 5k and second normally too (at the minimum). You must get your doors blown-off at every light by Subaru 360s. It's dangerous to let the other traffic surround you as you will be involved in their stupidity behind the wheel, where if you stomp on it at every green light you'll stay away from their trouble. Do you think German '02 drivers putt-around at 3.5k max on the street, let alone the autobahn? Exercise your '02 hard if you want it to live right and not get fat. Of course you will join those '02 drivers like me who barely crack 15mpg on the street and have a rough time getting to 20mpg on the Freewaybahns.

you tell him that. Your dad is like many people who bought '02s new (not that he did necessarily get it new). They were the "fussy" '02ers who wanted the sportiness of an '02 but didn't have an ounce of sportiness in their bones. I knew plenty of them, and my oldest friend (since 10th grade in '66), who is the original owner of my '02 (I bought it from him) is the king of the fussy '02ers. He was and is a geek at the wheel and cringes when he rides with me the instant I hit 3k on the revometer.

in the 5000-5500 range for over half an hour! I know my motor's a

little tired and that it was borderline abusive to do triple digits with a

4-speed for 60 miles but man that little car took it like a champ and

didn't miss a beat! These cars like to rev for sure. Have fun on your

bike, Jason!

How is it done? I remember once asking my dad when I was about 11yo "hey when do you shift this thing" about his 280sl, he said 4500, I guess I never got over that!!!

And the mileage, sheesh, good thing gas is cheap?

My 76 NEVER sees a shift under 4500rpm. It just feels wrong. At least once a day it sees redline, and sometimes even chirps it's big Yoko's into 2nd gear. I've owned a few 16V VW's, and 4AGE Toyotas, so maybe I just forgot how to shift lower, but man, my 02 loves it!

and wound it up before shifting, zipping down the freeway, and arrived at work the happiest I had been in weeks. Sure the mileage sucks, but it sure was fun. Of course with the 5spd, 80 mph is not that high on the revs.
