Is the Touring tii intake canister different from a sedan tii one? I thought they were all the same.

As far as I can tell they are identical.
@adawil2002 - if there are differences between the regular tii and Touring canisters can you tell us what they are? I have a Touring and it looks like every other tii canister I’ve seen...(?)

Congrats on the purchase, assuming you did purchase a 2000/2002tii Touring!!! [emoji16]

I did not buy a Tii Touring. A good friend has one and isn't on the FAQ.

The touring MAY not have the nipple for the primitive vapor recovery system. I've seen canisters w/o that nipple, and figured it was only needed on USA model tiis.  If the touring was a euro car, which I believe they all were, it might be the same as the euro tii.

Anyway, I'd be curious to know what you find.  GL!

Ahhh, ok... well, congrats to your friend! [emoji12] I’ll have to check out the canister on my 02tii Touring to see if that nipple exists or not (and if I do have a spare one I’ll let you know - I know I have spare ones with the nipple if your friend is interested?). Never thought about that but I supposed it makes sense that Euro models wouldn’t have them!

Agreed with everything that’s been said. I believe we’re talking about the difference between a 1971-75 Euro 2000tii/2002tii airbox (no nipple for an evaporative recovery system) and a 1972-73 U.S. 2002tii airbox (nipple for an evaporative recovery system, but no bracket for the 1974-only vacuum limiter valve). Unlike a touring’s windshield or taillights, this is a Euro-vs-U.S. distinction, and not a body style distinction.

If the 1974 U.S. 2002tii airbox got the factory “hose dent” in the front snorkel, did the 1974-75 Euro 2002tii airbox also receive the “hose dent”? If so, we need to know whether Andrew’s friend’s touring is post-1973. Below, at left, is a pre-1974 front snorkel and, at right, a post-1973 front snorkel.

Regards,

Steve

Steve - I can confirm that my ‘74 Euro 2002tii Touring DOES have the indent in the top snorkel.

Thank you, Todd!

So, given this info, I’m going to offer the following summary:

1. The rear “snorkel” of the tii airbox has only one form, used on both Euro and U.S. tii’s throughout tii production (1971-75).

2. The central section of the tii airbox has three forms:

    A. “European” = no nipple for evaporative recovery system,

    B. “U.S. round taillight” = nipple for evaporative recovery system (first photo below),

    C. “U.S. square taillight” = nipple for evaporative recovery system and bracket for vacuum limiter valve.

3. The front “snorkel” of the tii airbox has two forms:

    A. “1971-73” = no “hose dent”,

    B. “1974-75” = “hose dent” (right example on second photo below).

This summary is a starting point. We can refine it, correct it, modify it, as needed.

Especially because it was cool for decades to replace the factory tii airbox with an aftermarket unit, many airboxes are today comprised of parts from different years and different markets. From a fit perspective, any tii airbox should fit on any tii. But if you are looking to restore the original appearance — and function, if you maintain an evaporative recovery system and/or vacuum retard distributor — you’ve got to do your homework.

Regards,

Steve

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
