Question about center exhaust

The center exhaust/resonator on my ‘73 (non-tii) is rattling, so I ordered a replacement. I got a genuine BMW part number 18121245265. The exhaust on my car has a long, thin resonator like this:

But the replacement part I received is shorter and fatter. Weirdly, the part number painted on is correct. Did I get the wrong part? Does it matter that it looks different? Here’s what I received:

What you received is correct, produced by the OEM manufacturer Eberspächer. It looks like your old resonator is an Ansa or Bosal piece. Here's a couple shots of my recently purchased (Jan. 2019) Eberspächer resonator & rear muffler:54a323de3c95ed94db13d78168b756c3.jpg3d0a6590c292a844fc95ea4cea1cf07c.jpg

FYI, the original center mufflers (resonator) were long and skinny--that's what came on both my '69 and '73, which had their original resonators when I bought 'em.  The replacements I bought some years later (factory on the '69, Midas on the '73) are also long and skinny like your first picture.  Looks like BMW changed the design--not surprising as the newer design uses less metal so is less expensive to manufacture, and they can charge the same (or larger) price for it.

That is true-the ctr resonator on my '73 was original before I replaced it. However, I think those were still painted that flat gray, correct? The aftermarket Ansa and Bosal pieces are a raw metal finish w/the exception of the Ansa sport resonators which are black.

I replaced my non standard knackered exhaust on my Tii about 10 years ago with an OEM Eberspächer exhaust, after 10 years it sounds great still is rock solid and only has surface rust on it. Next time I get an exhaust it will either be the same or a stainless. You cant go wrong with Eberspächer, real quality.

That’s helpful to know, thanks! Your car looks super clean btw, nice job.
Thanks-we're spoiled in CA w/rust-free cars! Steam cleaned and that was it. I should really get under it and hand scrub all the nooks and crannies though.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
