Joeys 1602 build

Recommended Posts

I bought this car 3 years ago and due to a lack of funding to restore it straight away I gradually lost interest and it ended up sitting up for 3 years. So recently  I decided I’d start restoring it. Ive heard these cars are notorious for rust and I think I managed to find the holy grail of rust with this one, it’s everywhere, like if the garage was a swimming pool everywhere. I want to fabricate as much as possible as I work for an engineering manufacturer so resources are good. Now although I’m in a place that does fabrication im on the assembly side of things so before starting this project i had very little welding experience so I’m VERY sceptical about weakening the structure of the car. I’m using a sealey mig welder with 0.8 flux core wire, reason being my friend gave it to me saving me having to buy one. Anyway I’m 6 months in and nearing the end or the rust repair but I’m curious to whether or not I did a good enough job to move on to paint or do I have to go back and redo parts. Critism is encouraged as I can only learn. Skin repairs are done with 0.8mm sheet and chassis repairs I used 1.5mm sheet.

Wow! Winner of the most pictures posted in one thread!! ?

That’s a LOT of welding! Congratulations on the fortitude to persevere through it. How many spools of wire have you used so far?

What color you gonna paint it?

Keep up the good work, brother.

Impressive! For a "new to welding" person, you seem to be doing just fine.

The only thing I can think of - on the metal that you have repaired and covered in gray primer - keep in mind you want to make sure those panels protected, not just primer if you can help it - you don't want it to rust again.

Car looks great and yes, what color will it be?

Thank you for posting, was fun to look at all the photos.

Glad to see this car being restored instead of junked. Looks like very professional work, did you make those patch panels?

Yeah I made all the patch panels. I did it in small sections to minimize any chance of the body twisting and moving. It would have been a million times easier and quicker if the car was on a rotisserie but I have to work with what I have.

Ive lost count on how many spools of wire I’ve gone through at this stage ?

For the color I want to bring it back to the original blue which I think is fjord?

Or possibly find a very close modern day bmw match. Saves me taking the enigine out to spray the bay and keeps the purists happy.

My plan is when I’m finished the last few bits of the welding I’m going to bring it back down to bare metal and etch prime the whole car. I might aswel do everything right while I can.

Im currently finishing up the rear right hand side sill

Finishing up the front sill. I folded some 2mm for the jacking points so I have a little more faith in it when it’s on axle stands in the future. I rolled some 1.5mm sheet in work close to what I wanted and now I’m just hammering it to match the outer sill.

You are doing good job with the space and tools you have. Actually very good!

You could do better with a real welding machine (not flux core) and some more tools. You certainly have the talent and persistence required. After all this job you need to be careful to protect all the seams against rusting again.

Racing is Life - everything before and after is just waiting!

  • 3 weeks later...

I finished the lower sill at the front, I might have to add a bit to the length to meet the wing but I’ll deal with that when the time comes. I took a break from welding and painted my rocker cover but as for now I’m currently fixing a ton of rust and a bad repair job on the drivers door.

In your pic of the boot it looks a lot like Pastellblau, or, maybe Riviera.

Email your VIN/Chassis no. to        info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com        and you'll get the build date and original colour.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
